Big Air Magazine Review - DRS & Notos

A member here [Tango Sierra] sent me some magazines he designed and asked my opinion. He sent me 2 different magazines for the FX DRS, one is designed specifically for slugs, the other for pellets. His design is similar, in operation, to the CARM Magazines, in the way they are loaded. So, if you’ve ever used a CARM Magazine, you will be familiar with how you load pellets into the pellet magazine. Both magazines hold 15 projectiles. The slug magazine is on the left, the pellet magazine is on the right.

The slug magazine is a bit different in that you have to spin the inner wheel to the furthest slot and load the first slug, then filling the remaining slugs until the magazine is full. This magazine is unique because it does not have a cover that needs to be removed, but it does hold the slugs in place nicely and they don’t fall out!

He also sent me a Notos Magazine. It also operates similar to the CARM magazines. The Notos Mags hold 12 rounds. This shows the front and back of the Notos magazine.

I tested these magazines in my DRS and Notos and found they worked flawlessly. Cycling it very smooth. I have several different brand magazines for my DRS, I have the original small FX magazine, the large FX magazine, an Orion Iguana Hunter Magazine and one I found on Etsy. They all function very well, but I find these to be the easiest to load up with projectiles!

Troy also threw in some DRS SHP Plenum plugs he developed. I am currently using a couple wooden dowels in my SHP Plenum to reduce the inner volume of the plenum, but these are pretty ingenious as they were designed to reduce the inner volume of the SHP Plenum in 3cc increments!

The volumes of the various plugs are as follows:
Longest - 9cc
Mid - 6cc
Shortest - 3cc

The sizes allow steps of 3cc of displacement from 3cc to 24cc. The small holes on the end allow one to grab them with forceps if they somehow get stuck in the plenum. These were printed using ASA filament with 100% internal fill to minimize air pockets. I have not tried these yet, but only because I’m waiting on a part to arrive that will require me to degas my DRS, so I will be removing my wooden dowels and installing these when that part arrives.

Troy is interested in designing magazines for other air guns as well, so if you have an air gun magazine need, reach out and see what he can do. Anyone interested in trying these magazines or plenum plugs can contact Troy at [email protected]! He doesn’t have a website yet, but is working on one, so stay tuned!

Paul, nice write up on those nice magazines! They look well made 👍. Getting meself a Notos for an early xmas present so I will order a couple of these.
You will definitely want some different mags than what comes with the Notos! I also have a CARM mag for my Notos and the quality of Troy’s mags are the same or better and you don’t have the expensive shipping fees or exchange rates to deal with!
