Big Brother lurking

I am currently looking at options for a chrono replacement and presently am taking a look at the FX chrono.

Not sure how many of you have looked thru the privacy notice, but unless you are in Europe or are a CA resident, the app not only collects information that has nothing to do with air gunning, it also does not ensure data security or your privacy. In fact, it outright informs you that it will not respect Do Not Track software you might be running while tracking you via software and Geolocation.

Although I appreciate that most if not all apps are vehicles to collect data from use for the sole purpose of advertisement, I would have hoped that FX would have respected the privacy of its users as many of us appreciate our privacy, no? It seems FX felt not so.

Next onto MagnetoSpeed V3. While their display is wired, they also have an app I think. I wonder about their Privacy Notice.

I often miss the analog days.

Yep...as an old guy, I have never trusted big daddy. Never use my gps on my phone, instead use the trusty old garmin, they may know where I am at but only for a short time. Dont use phone or computor for any banking, the wife does and has had numerous hits, always got her money back, but what a hassle!! I have a secure CC that I use for purchases, been hacked many times but always a quick refund, usually within 24 hrs. Dontbuse cash apps for anything no matter how convienent !! If the family gets into trouble we have code words if help is needed, not gonna scam us. Yep in todays world, you better learn to protect yourself and family, cause no one else will!!! If you think it wont happen to me.....guess again....you better have an out !!!

We are the product. The ATN app is way more invasive than FX’s app. I ran a packet sniffer when using it and then promptly deleted it. Many off the shelf security cams ping an IP to china, sends your network info and MAC address. Even a dang wifi enabled crockpot pinged china. And don’t think your data here isnt being collected and sold off either, knowingly or not. Metadata alone can be pieced together to know when you are home, when you shower, if you are even cheating if analyzed correctly. Ring cameras spy on your phones now as you drive by them too, essentially geofencing your movements. Smart tv’s talk to smart phones and know if you’ve seen an ad or not, and if you change the channel or turn down the volume. We are the product, act accordingly.

Every one is constantly being tracked by their Smart Phones. Whether they realize it or not.

Not only Smart Phones. Alexa is listening to what you're saying, your car is transmitting your routes, Smart Beds know what's going on if you know what I mean, and underwear is counting number of air being passed. While some is clearly Tongue in Cheek, it's kinda not.

Don't think for a second that GPS matters. They can triangulate you more accurately using the cell phone network anyway. You connect to multiple towers, they calculate your delay and pinpoint your spot.

Just having you cell phone turned on can find your location.

Unless you are using a VPN, they know how much, how long, how often you’re on this site. From there, they can see what guns you have, how often you shoot, what you buy and sell here because you post it. Your IP address is visible so they know (about) where you live.

But you know what? I don’t give a rat’s behind. (And you shouldn’t either) I am the most boring individual out of the 329 million in the USA they could follow. So BIG BROTHER, here is my single finger salute. Come and get me….

From an end-user standpoint the FX chrony is much easier to use than my LabRadar unit was, or the Caldwell, or the various other chronys I've owned. And, I admit it, I accidentally shot and killed at least two of them and wounded a couple more by accident trying to get a bullet or arrow between the lights and the photo detectors. I've never had that problem with the FX chrony. The thing not only works great on airguns, but it's small enough to take along to the firearm range. Some of the guys there have never chronied their various pistol loads because the ranges wouldn't let them use a large chronograph. And now they can because of the FX chrony being so small.

I understand that aspects of functionality and ease of use of an electronic device are completely separate from questions of whether the same devices are designed to gather user data for secret reporting back to some central group/company/government. I spent a long career working with questions of network security. People in the business understand that the evolving network of internet connected devices will include many things which people don't expect. Light switches and temperature controls will all have individual IP address and each one will provide a potential entryway back into our home networks. Our phones and internet and credit card and license plate tracking provide a more accurate summary of our personal habits than most of us probably realize. It is all something to worry about, but in a balanced way which weighs those risks to our privacy against so many other more immediate dangers which people face in their daily lives.

I'm not disagreeing with any of the concerns mentioned in the thread. I just view data theft in my life as one relatively small part of a very complex life risk assessment process. I use my FX chrony very often. It might pass on some personal info about me. I certainly wouldn't want it to send out info for remote control of my router for example, but I probably have tighter privacy settings on my electronics than most people and don't worry about it. The broader topic of the many devices which are and will be reporting on us all the time is the elephant in the room. And it's not at all practical for most people to stop releasing their private info even if they try really hard. Something to consider but not normally something to keep people awake unless they are a computer network manager. Those guys always worry and almost never sleep.

If you have a birth certificate or social security number you are legal property.

Note the birth cert is printed on bond paper.

Read the back of your SS card

https://www.gmeiutility.org/search.jsp

Put your SS # in "challenge"

Upper right dropdown select challenge and insert number.

You will then see all who have traded against your value.

You think it's a joke?

Do you think you are somehow hiding?

You are "chattel" (not a misprint)

The money this page/site makes is massive in pretty much the same way as the globe controlling ####

FWIW.

VPN is a hotline direct to NSA so avoid them.

I agree with you in principle but the sad fact is that if you have a cell phone or a smart watch or even just Google your data is already being taken on a huge scale. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying you shouldn't worry about it. In fact I am currently in the process of deleting my Google account and I have no social media like Facebook or Instagram. I take privacy very seriously it's just that worrying about the fx chrono when you already have a spying device you keep on you 24hrs a day seems a bit silly. However anytime you can cut out data collection you should. Most people are not willing to give up all the convenience these kinds of technology provides. It really takes a sacrifice to keep your privacy these days. I even heard recently that certain credit card companies are providing info to authorities unsolicited when you buy large amounts of ammo or gun purchases and last year mastercard 2as doing the same thing for people who bought hotel rooms and such in Washington DC on Jan 6. I am definitely not trying to get into the political stuff about that but privacy is really under attack when private companies are behaving that way. I won't be getting the fx chrono if it's collecting data from me. We live in strange times. I doubt fx will be doing anything terribly wrong with the data btw it's just the principle of the thing.

This is why I don't understand why so many guys make it easy for "Big Brother" to know what airguns and powder burners they have by feeling the need to list them all on every forum they are on. Nothing like making sure they and the thieves all know what you have and where to find it. Addresses are easy to find on line. Would you list all your wife's jewelery or how much cash you have on line? Same thing! Just food for thought.

Yea I don't give a rats a%$%$ either. LOL I own several machine guns, suppressors, sbr's you name it. The Alphabet org knows me very well. Matter of fact I shoot with a few of them local guys at my range. All machine gun shoots happen at my range. I'm not too concerned about them knowing what I'm doing. LOL

We are indeed the product, and even if it is something we paid in full for, that do no longer just go for "free " services ASO

If you participate in the "normal" world there are pretty much no way around it, but a few precautions can put one at ease.

1: while not a fix, using a VPN is a okay idea, but it can give some issues, for instance i was kicked off this very forum for posing as a American digitally to see if a EU shop would send pellets to a American member in dire pellet need, so i have to turn my VPN off or at least have it set to use the Danish servers,,,,,, which is a bit of a let down,,,, but manageable.

2: as with so many things, you should probably not stand on a roof top and crying them out, the world are getting strange, and many things we consider normal are outrageous nowadays.

For instance not long ago i was told off by a kid in a store i come to at least 2 times a week, my "problem" it seem was that i complimented the girls working the cash register there some times, and i mean young girls i could at least be the father to if not more.

Apparently that is now a offense to girls, and i am a creepy old guy.

I often think it is a good thing that i am nearing the end of my run in this place, clearly me and the world are growing apart.

While the FX app stealing your soul may be small beans in the grand scheme of life, I think the point is that FX should have the morality not to collect the data. I can understand their desire to get stats on how their product is being used, so as to improve the chrony and/or app in the future. But considering users have already paid for the app, through the purchase of the chrony, they have no excuse to be sneaky about getting the data - they shouldn't be trying to recoup their investment as if they had given it all away for free. I would guess a large number of users would be willing to freely submit usage data for improvements - but FX should ASK.

And why on earth would someone go to a random website & plug in their social security number?
