Boat tail slugs - not used by more than a handful?

I was using the Griffin BT’s some time back and as drumie has stated, I actually had higher fps with the BT than with regular slugs. The problem I ran into was their length was too long for my Impact magazines.
I did just order some of the Altaros as well as more Griffin BT to try in my Panthera due to the larger/wider magazines.
Bad idea. As you should know Crack is not cheap. And it is addictive. Don't ask me how I know. 🙄

Shooting the 40gr Alteros in 22, I find that they are easily over powered. But once I found the ideal speeds (slow) they shot great. Better in my tests compared to the conventional slugs in 40 gr and had more speed and power at long distance like at 300 yards. In a panthera you may find that they do not like speed and shoot out like a shotgun. Hopefully you got the 66 gr kings that are 13.9mm in length as I'm very curious as to how they shoot. I just ordered a bunch of the 60 gr Queens in 25 hoping they do as well as the 40gr kings in 22. Too bad they ship them in the slow boat out of China even though they are not even made there! 😡

One other thing I should have mentioned in my previous post and didn't is that G1 should never be used as a basis for the BC of slugs with large meplats, or for any slugs with boat tails. There is a slug drag law labelled as SLG0 in the GP Conway developed ballistic apps which should be better, and I have just tried to produce a version for boat tailed slugs. Both need to be proven but should be better than G1 which is nowhere near at higher speeds.

Interesting, that would suggest that their stability is getting marginal as speeds approach sound speed from your gun, possibly they need more twist than they get from your barrel.

@Healthservices trust me I know you gotta pay the cost if you wanna be the boss. I don’t need any NSA’s for a while, I won a batch back in the summer so I can dabble with some others.
I’ve been using the AVS slugs as well but more so in my Leshiy 2.
When I initially tried the Altaros slugs in .22 I had them shooting way to fast so I just stuck with NSA for my Impacts. I will definitely keep the speed down when first testing the Altaros slugs in .25, I went with the 49.5gr and 48gr in the Griffins.

When I first shot them it was in my 1/18 800mm and my superior heavy in 700mm both in 22. 1000 fps and I could not even find the POI most times. When I slowed them down was when I found the poi and rezeroing confirmed higher bc than the conventional slugs I was firing. The last two times I shot them was 1/18 800mm and 1/14 800 mm they shot excellent at 880 to 920 fps but maybe it was other factors. Valve open too long? I dunno. It was what worked for me. I'm just a dummy trying to find the magic slug.

If you want to jump start the addiction and can't wait you can go to

They have the .25 kings. I did not only because I found out about the Queens in 25.

And although I was able to get other slugs as accurate. Like the NSA which is by far cheaper. I was not able to keep the same energy at the farther distances. At least so it seems. The NSA...

At 219 about 4 weeks ago? Here is the vid for these shots with the Altaros..

And 2 weeks ago at 319 yards the tactacam was not good at filming white backgrounds

I put the coke can there as I did not have a tape to measure with but I can at least measure a can later. I was using the pig to find POI as the wind kept changing back and forth that morning. 🙄

Which profile commonly available should be used, such as in Strelok Pro?

I imagine that air vs powder makes the difference. The boattail will be less air efficient that a flat or dish base. More surface area that air has to push for energy and also creating more turbulence in the chamber as well.
Idk this doesn't sound right to me.

Boattail would actually have greater surface area than flat or slightly concave I'd think.

I wonder if boattail slugs are possibly more consistent or easier to tune for. As the projectile exits the muzzle, would the propellant gas dispel with less influence on the projectile if the back end of the projectile is shaped flat, concave or convex?

@EdinGa What are you shooting them out of? What's the grain weight?
They are around 28 grains with the longest hollow point pins. I'm shooting them from my Benjamin Cayden. This is the first 100 yard group I tried with them. I'm hoping to be able to try again this weekend.

@EdinGa Thanks. I recently shot some heavier .22 BT slugs at a similar velocity at 50 yards, but haven't taken them out further yet. They handled mild wind well. It's good to read about your experience at slower velocities.
It was pretty windy the day I shot that group. I've shot them out to 60 with great accuracy using my Gamo Urban. It only pushes them around 630 fps but they really don't seem to care what velocity they are running.

The force on the projectile is the bore/groove_area x pressure. The shape of the tail makes no difference. It's like a piston, domed or flat, same force. Otherwise a boat tail that tapered back to point would never move.
