Boat tail slugs - not used by more than a handful?

@EdinGa I shot them from my .22 Huben K1 with 35 grainers. Here's a shot string.

Edit: Had to find a target. This was the last group I shot with them that day.

A few airguns have a fast enough twist rate and enough fpe to take advantage of that higher BC boat tail shape. G1 works at supersonic and OK up to about 900fps. The RA4 drag model is a better match when shooting a boat tail as it approaches Mach 1. SLG0 is also closer if you can use it.

Shooting a short projectile at 950fps or less, a flat base is great. If you are shooting a 40+grain .217 at 1000+fps, than there should be noticeable benefits with a properly sized boat tail.

Although I'm sure I still do not know how to use strelock that well yet. Make this comparison between a 40 grain Javelin going at1080 FPS compared to Altaro's 40 grain going 900 FPS and see What kind of speed and foot pounds of power you have at 300 yds and beyond.

And the Altaros boat tail slug

For me at least it will be a lot easier to make my gun push a 40 gr to 900 fps than 1080 fps.

Even though it's not maynot be the right function to use, it give some very interesting values to look at.

I like them....for my heavier slugs....

Since it displaces so much lead in the base....
It will make it a longer slug, compared to a flat or dished base slug!!

Plug me in. Please. .30063 ish vulcan3 30 cal the mag might be a limiting factor. Don't know I just hate shooting non boat tails. Can't get anyone to make which is surprising for such a popular decent gun. Please call me at 9283794275

@Preston tist You may want to contact the young man who runs this site

I’ve purchased slugs from him and he is legitimate. In my opinion he makes good boattail slugs.

They have the .25 kings. I did not only because I found out about the Queens in 25.

That's the slugs I cast and shoot out of my Sumatra. 25. They seem to be really accurate out of its 1:18 barrel.

I can only speak about the .25 cal boat tail slugs vs. the same weighted flat or dish base slugs. With the rifles I have it seems that I get more distance and accuracy from the boat tail vs any other. From 44 to 61 grain slugs vs the same weighted flat or dish based just don't reach out as far.
Look up my airgun range channel on YouTube and he puts flat and dish bases against the boat tail.

I have a .30 60gr. boattail HP. It sells well.

As far as boatails in .510 Caliber a 650 grain spire point boat tail is very accurate...It has a B.C of around .5 ....The other slugs i shoot are usually a gas check design without gas check..They shoot..my theory in airguns is less bearing surface the better..

I have been playing around with BT a little bit. I want to really test them in my Panthera. What I have seen is you get more speed out of them with the same weight flat base slug due to the less bearing surface it has. More power with less energy.
You’re saying that you compared slugs of equal weight and the boat tails were running faster than the flat or dish base? I also am confused by your last statement. More power with less energy? What do you mean by that? Energy and power more or less refer to the same thing. What were you referring to? Also I’m pro boat tail but they really excel at long distance shooting. They take a second to stabilize when they leave the muzzle. I’ve not had a chance to test any boat tails out of My V3s yet. They’re just too long. I have some Griffin 73 grainers and they’re just too damn long for the breech. You can see in the photo how much longer a boat tail is compared to a dish or flat base.

Less bearing surface, so it has less drag on slug going through barrel. However more speed does not mean it shoots better.

With less bearing surface and less drag you get more speed out of the slug and the gun has to use less energy to get the same speed from a boat tail vs a flat base of the same weight.
I have started playing with the boat tail slugs again. In my RTI Mora in .357 it loves the Griffin 135 boat tails. It shoots them much better than the flat base slugs.
My Evo .30 also shoots the boat tails slugs very well. Only issue is they don't feed out of the magazine so I don't shoot them.
