Booster Pump options for use in the air gun community

A year down the road into my new hobby of long range big bore air gunning . With 300 lbs of lead slung down range in my new learning curve. My yong heng air compressor finally failed. I'm going to rebuild it an see how that goes. I'm wanting like many of you a more reliable source of high pressure air. Booster pumps are amazing in principle and are easy to maintenance rebuild with longevity of life. Altaros makes a booster very friendly In price options and warranty and were very nice to answer my questions. Second is extreme big bore air rifles booster. I called them and they answered all my questions said lifetime warranty on major components Texas USA company. Comparable price to altaros. I have also.been checking into Haskell air driven gas boosters. They have been made since 1975 NASA airline industry and flammable gas. They will fill to.high pressure 5500 psi for new scba Scott 5.5 bottles. After talking to Haskell dealer receptionist and salesman they were very nice but couldn't answer my questions on there boosters. So they transferred me to there services department they were absolutely rude and did not want to be bothered writing quotes or answering questions. There units used refurbished are $3600 and up new $6600 and up. Long story short Haskell may be the best booster made . but I dnt ever want to deal with there service dept again. Chicken thief and many others have been using the altaros with excellent results. Does anyone have experience with extreme big bore booster?

I've been using the Ayrtekk Booster since the first of the year to help my nitrogen fills last me a little longer. So far so good. My Nitrogen tank is down to 2000 psi now. That's the lowest it's ever been since I've been using Nitrogen as I usually get a fresh tank when it gets close to 3000 psi in years past. Gonna see how close to 1000 psi I can get before I return this one for a fresh tank.

I have learned to use and air compressor on the low pressure side to make my nitrogen go even further. When I use the two SCBA tanks the low pressure side seems to run out as fast or faster than the high pressure side, which was my reasoning for using the shop compressor on the low side recently/

I have a friend in Ohio and he bought the Extreme Booster about the same time I bought the Ayrtekk. He's been using nitrogen for some time like me and he bought a nice shop compressor to use on the low side to make his nitrogen go further as well. He has no complaints.

I guess our only complaints are we wish we had done this sooner? LOL Gotta make those nitrogen fills go as far as they can go. I'm shooting more powerful guns that use more air now days and it really helps.

Have you tried helium? I want some for hunting season. Is it real expensive?

No sir, haven't tried helium. I just go with the Nitrogen because the tank holds up to 6000 psi. The air we breathe is 80% nitrogen. Plus I figure it would add less moisture to the inside of the air tubes.

The Nitrogen is fairly expensive where I live. It's roughly $120 yr to just rent the tank and and around $180 a fill. I got a fresh tank last October and have 2000 psi left. Haven't been shooting much in the heat of the summer. It's hot, muggy ,buggy stank, swampy here in southern NC during the summers. Hope to be slinging some lead by the end of September. I just shoot paper and plink mostly.

Where I live 2000 psi is all they have in the large steel tanks at the regular welding.supply place. 45 min drive to get 6000 psi. I put a new piston rings head gaskets on my yong heng air compressor and she is running again. I have a 75min Scott 5500 psi carbon fiber scba tank I'd like to get hydro tested and drive the 45 min and get it filled with helium just for hunting season. I have a aqua environment regulator that's good to 7000 psi. I'd like to try it once like upnorth air gunner did. I'm shooting 650 gr slugs. Ill take every fps i.can.get😇

Sorry to rain on your parade.

The Altaros booster is a fully automatic unit that runs of a shop compressor, The Ayrtekk and Extreme are pure bottle to gun manual boosters.

Cant be compared (in a fair way).

The Altaros Booster can be Jerry rigged so the booster part runs on shop air and the LP piston is fed 150psi gas (N2, H2 or bottled air).

Thay way your rented tanks can be run all the way down. The true boosters suffer from a fairly small piston and below @40bar~600psi they seem to run forever without doing much. Nature of the beast.

Wow, A friend brought his Texan over last spring and seems I remember he was shooting 300 something grain. That thing was a beast can't imagine 650 grains. You'll need all the air you can get to push those babies.

Was thinking this one was different than the original? https://www.altaros.cz/en/compressors/160-altaros-double-booster-b2b-edition-bottle-bottle.html

Chicken thief is it possible to use my regulator oFf of the hose going to the gun to keep regulated shots. Say the booster is 4500 psi and set reg to 4300 psi? I want 4500 psi African air ordinance upgrade but still really wanna use my regulator. My aqua environment reg is good to 7000 psi. I can't find a option to fill to 5500 psi cost effective. That is. Without tripping over my own tongue. Say bottle to booster to t fitting to 2nd boost tank than regulator to air gun at say 4300psi in theory. I really wanna flatten trajectory and still tether. I know you can't do.it all but I'm tryin.

You are 100% correct in most ways.

It's still 100% fully automatic but is intended for Bottle to Bottle or gun. The neat thing is that they installed two HP pistons so it's whicked fast.

Can be run off a standard /5V) power bank in the field.

It can be driven from a single bottle or the work piston run from a shop compressor / alternate bottle (regulator is built in the booster)while clean air, H2, N2 is the compressed medium. I put in a pressure gauge in the line for work air and it never gets above 8.5bar~125psi, so that bottle can really be sucked dry. Because there is only two HP pistons the B2B starts to lose momentum around 40bar~600psi. It will work all the way down to almost zero but the nature of the beast is that it puts through less and less air.

I boosted my 9 liter CF bottle from 250bar~3625psi to 330bar~4785psi and used a 12liter bottle at 230bar~3335psi. Took mere minutes, and most all our HP hobby compressors absolutly loves to work more volume but less pressure. Instead of buying 3-4 YH's settle for the one you have and run it to 3000psi then boost that to 4500+psi with the booster who is 100% indifferent about work load and pressure.

Sorry i got carried away, but the Altaros is my pet and i dearly love the simple design and the superb quality for a resonable amount.

The Altaros B2B will, given a bottle of more than 600psi boost that to 4500psi.

It works 100% like a normal booster with the built in electronics. Set the output to 4500psi and shoot away, when pressure drops the booster kicks in and work up to 4500psi again, as many times as you have feed sir.

If you have the normal booster then run that 100% on bottle air regulated down to 10bar~150psi and you are in buisness until your feed bottle drops down to some 5bar~75psi. If you split that up using two bottles: One for feed and one for work then you can shoot way more (and have the luxury of feeding controlled gas to your gun (H2 wink)), but then again it will be almost the same as working two seperate bottled down.

If you set a B2B up with an almost empty reciever and a 5500psi feeder then gas/air simply will pass through the valves in the booster until pressure is equal, then you plug it in and boost to whatever you desire.

I've been using an Altaros compressor to bottle booster for the past year and have been very happy with it. It was a replacement for my Shoebox F10.

The one I didn't plan for and had to upgrade the shop compressor was the amount of air the Altaros uses. I believe about 80+% of the air goes to just driving the pistons with the remaining being put into the tank. I am using a 10 gallon CAT compressor with it now with some extra water traps and desiccant inline.

Thank you so much chickenthief. I'm going to get the Altaros . The booster has a regulator built In to it set it 4500 psi and it will work. I'm going to buy the booster first and save up for the African air ordinance upgrade. I shot to 300 yards for little bit tonight and my cold shot base worked real well. I m expanding my home range to 175 yards so testing will be easier and more convenient. I have almost reached my goal of long range air gunnin. Know I have to find a longer shooting range😀 I could not it without all my friend's at airgun nation

The B2B (Bottle to Bottle) have a built in regulator which provides air for work no more.

It does not have a HP regulator built in. It will pass air through until equalised, so do not hook it up to your Texan directly and then open a tank filled to 4500+psi. Use the regulator you have and feed the B2B 3625psi, it will simply pass air through until input pressure drops under 3625psi and then it will start to boost pressure back up to 3625psi.Set output pressure, add power and it is now set and you can forget until it drops under 600psi.

I would have gone for the Altaros B2B booster as Henrik did, but where I live I have no option for filling the donor tank.

I opted to run an Altaros booster fed by two CAT compressors. At first I tried it with one compressor but it does run far faster and produces less water with two.

No complaints, much slower than the B2B booster, but I enjoy watching it work. Takes a couple hours to top my 30 minute tank off from 3000 psi to 4200 psi about once a week. Regards

Nice thank you so much for your real world experience with the Altaros booster. There new hybrid version gives you the option to use the shop comp or bottle to bottle as I understand. So.you can have you cake and eat it to!!! . The air source is more important than any of our PcP air.rifles . Affordable reliable booster pumps are truly the only way for our pcp to gain more performance..

My 2 CAT compressors were used as they are oil free and I did not want to retire to 220v and did not want the oil smell in my house. The compressors cost $400. At the time, now $465, and I can easily ship them south to San Diego for repair and still run on one, albeit slower.

I researched the bottle 2 bottle conversion kit for mine, but decided to wait and see how my setup works as shown above. As is, it produces all the air I need for shooting at the 11 yards I am forced to shoot these days.

The 2 CATS run very quietly, 71 decibels, I have to place my hand on the compressor to determine which one is actually running, as does the Altaros booster and they run at a cool temperature, aided by the fans I installed on the top of each. They also are better suited for shipping as they have a built in roll cage and we all know the damage our shippers cause with packages. My first compressor, shipped from the east c9ast, not a CAT, arrived damaged, as did my CAT 10 gallon auxiliary tank which I purchased from a dealer on the east coast. I repaired the tank, but the damaged compressor was returned. That was when I discovered Walmart would pick it up at my front door for free and refund the price. As a result, I buy using Walmart or directly from the CAT factory.

Having stated this, if I were shooting as much as you and Henrih, and had the access to a fill for that 2nd bottle I would be boosting bottle to bottle.

RR,

Yah, my retinas are mostly destroyed from migraines bursting the vessels feeding them. I took a head hit from a 70 lb bench thrown at me from a fellow 2 months out of prison in a Portland Or riot. These days I shoot at 11 yards, don’t drive and need help putting a Allen wrench in a screw, can’t see a full profile semi coming at 50 yards. But I still cast, still shoot.

However it has been one hell of a chase. I Always knew I would hit the grave broadside and exclaim “ Now that was one hell of a ride,”.
Just didn’t know I would do it without headlights.

Be safe,

Roachcreek
