Here' my story-

Friday morning- Up early and I got my .22 Marauder detuned and made my dope card as well as I had the time for. (I know, I should be shooting .177, but I don't own one) Sighted in my new to me 1720 and did my best to make a dope card for it. In between breaks to air up I was loading up camping gear and trying to remember everything I'd need.
I had not been practicing much, so I wasn't expecting any laurels, especially since I was planning on leaving Saturday and not shooting Sunday. Thanks to unforeseen circumstances, I got the chance to shoot the final half on Sunday.

Friday afternoon-I got to the range around 2pm with barely enough time to register and grab a campsite before the Pistol match started. Everything was very well organized thanks to the Airgun Oregon shooters and Sacramento Valley club with a huge assist from Scott Hull, the Morro Bay/SLSBA president. I shot my first ever pistol FT match with my week-old 1720-I hadn't even practiced with shooting it from sticks so I was happy with a 14 score and was proud of my one long shot knockdown until my squadmate said "Wrong target!' sigh...

Saturday- to say wind was a challenge would the understatement of the year! It was also hot and very dry for this near to the coast and that was tiring. (I'm blaming the weather and not the excellent wine from Scott E. I overindulged in the night before, LOL!) I missed most of the distant targets on Saturday and learned to love the tiny kill zones and close shots. Thankfully I had good holdover data in 1-yard increments out to 20 yards and knocked down virtually all of the near targets. I finished with 36 Saturday-missed a few due to senior moments.

Sunday-Temps dropped to mid 60s and the wind was starting as we finished the shooter's meeting. I did a bit better and finished the match with a 39 after cleaning my final lane. The awards banquet was a hoot with great food and I stayed to help with the immense tear-down process.

All in all, I had a blast and met some great folks from out of state and got to spend time with the usual great bunch-came home walking on air!

Thanks and Kudos to all who made it such a great event!

I was having too much fun to take real pics, but here are a couple phone pics-

John Knapp shooting

John you are to be commended.
To attend a national event with little to no expectations other than to learn and have fun. I’ve listen to guys make excuses after excuses why they can’t even shoot a club match. They are not going to get any better sitting in front of a screen watching videos and reading slanted reviews on products and trying to “buy” a win.
It’s like swimming; if you think you’ll learn everything you need to know from watching, you’ll probably drown.

Stay with it.

You have a lot of fun and some new-found camaraderie ahead to look forward to.

Good summary John! That wine that Scott E brought- it wouldn't happen to have been from the same vintage as the product I believe he brought to the State match? That liquid was superb!

I think you covered a really good & overlooked point about any match, but the State and National Match in particular- the competition is important, but the real fun is in the everything else- the people, food , area, night life, stories, comradeship (remember when having a comrade wasn't a political statement?).

Come for the fun, stay for the match.

Dave and Oakhonor,

Thanks for the kind words! I've actually been shooting FT with my .22 for a few years, though my business responsibilities don't allow me to shoot the Sunday portion of the 2-day matches often. That's starting to change for me so I hope to get to a few more matches in the future and will probably invest in a FT gun down the road. As to the wine, the Pinot was from the same batch if I recall correctly. Something I forgot to mention earlier was the excellent and bountiful food provided-thanks out to Wayne Burns and Scott Hull for their grill work and to Cameron K. for sharing a bit of venison.

Also Hola! to the Puerto Rican shooters-they are great company and fantastic shooters!

Gracias por ayudarme con mi Espanol y gusto conocerte!

What a great weekend ... really enjoyed shooting with James from Puerto Rico on Saturday, watching him with his tool of choice a finely tuned TX200 in which he shot so well !!

While a small Nationals by average standards we still had a fair amount of shooters outside the west coast ( 6 from PR alone ) whom in conversing with many attending seemed to enjoin the coastal environment / range they found them self's in. Sadly and understandably the WIND / Breeze for all but us locals was bit of a bummer being many had little to no experience doping such winds. When it Switched direction mid match pretty much both days folks were left kinda WTF do we do now ? ...... Such was this event for all attending having for the most part the local west coast shooters having the advantage of wind doping and scoring accordingly.

Match report we wait for .... Kudos to all who made the trek to Morro Bay, stiff lipped it and got after it !! Tough match it was.
