Brocock Atomic XR … Tiny .22

I took delivery of this rifle on March 8 and have had some time to get acquainted with it. The sole purpose of purchasing this gun was to hunt pigeons, squirrels and other furry and feathered pests. Previously I have been using a RTI Prophet Compact and Taipan Veteran Shorty, both in .22 as well. The latter two are both excellent rifles and I don’t foresee getting rid of either.

I ordered the optional external hammer spring adjuster and I am glad I did. It’s certainly possible to tune this rifle without it but it would be a royal pain unscrewing the buffer tube, adjusting the HS, replacing the buffer tube, test firing and then repeat until the desired tune is achieved. With the external adjuster it’s a matter of turning the adjuster wheel to tune the HS to achieve your desired velocity. I am not a guy who keeps monkeying with a tune but rather finds the optimal tune for my projectile and then leaving it alone.

My hunting buddy uses a P-rod with great success. We hunt on a large industrialized dairy farm with 4 barns that are 1/4 mile long each. The barns used to have steel roofs and I could use about anything to hunt there without fear of punching a hole in the roof. Two years ago the owner replaced the roof with fiberglass panels at a cost of $850,000.00. Now we have to be very selective of our shots to make sure if we miss we don’t poke holes in the new $$$ roofing. The low velocity of the P-rod is the perfect barn tool, at least for these barns.

So, why did I buy the Atomic if the P-rod is so perfect? Well ………… I did buy a Prod a few months ago. After I unboxed it, I (tried) to air it up and the air blew right back out. Seems they forgot to put a check valve in the fill valve. Even though they included a test target and verified it held air for 72 hours which were both out right lies. I was unable to get a magazine into the rifle either. Sent the gun back to Crosman for warranty repair. They returned it 3 weeks later. Aired it up and shot a test target at 30’ and it looked like it was shot with a 12 gage shotgun. Still couldn’t get the magazine inserted so I short it single feeding. Found the shroud was loose so I tightened it up. Then discovered the barrel was loose. Tried to tighten the set screws and it kept moving the barrel rearward. Took the rifle back to the dealer and got a refund. Sorry Crosman but you have some serious QA issues to work out before I spend any more money with your company.

Fast forward … I started researching other small alternative rifles. The Atomic piqued my interest so I read all of the articles, reviews and YouTubes I could find. Then I pestered L.Leon here on AGN through PMs with lots of questions. I noticed his shot pretty well with CPHPs and that was another goal that I had was to find a rifle that would shoot those inexpensive pellets accurate enough for my pesting trips. My other rifles just wouldn’t shoot them accurately and I was tired of using expensive lead on pests.

I had been using my veteran Shorty with great success but lugging that around for 4 hours was tiring. It’s super accurate, quiets without an additional moderator, awesome trigger, great shot count, 250 bar fill (which I prefer) and as reliable as a rock. My Prophet Compact is a great rifle too, a tad lighter, about the same shot count as Shorty and a 300 bar fill which I am not a huge fan of.

I ordered the Atomic from AOA and about a week later it was delivered. I mounted a USO 3-12 scope, cleaned the pipe and proceeded to start feeding it lead. The Atomic is lighter than the other two and it’s a 250 bar fill which are two pluses for me. I experimented with several tunes but Steve Scally at AEAC said to tune any pellet at 700 FPS and he was spot on. I found the best accuracy with CPHPs at 709 with SD under 2. My groups shrank o a single ragged hole a5 25Y at that tune and that is where it’s now.

The atomic is not a bench gun but can be shot from a bench. Its best use IMO is in the field. It shoulders quickly, it’s light, short and maneuverable.

Now to the cons … there always is, right?
1) In stock form, it’s loud and not back yard friendly. I’ve tried a few LDCs and I found that the FX Donny FL is the quietest and most accurate at my current tune.
2) I was hoping the power adjuster (transfer port) would give me more shots than it did. #2 (medium) yielded about 3 more shots and #3 (low) yielded about the same before it fell off the regulator. Both #2 and #3 TP settings made the SD numbers go way up. #1 (high) had the lowest SD numbers.
3) We’ve been hunting in cold weather. I find the edges of the safety and trigger guard are quite sharp and made my fingers sore rather quickly. I would like to see Brocock soften these edges on future generations.
4) Air usage is quite good considering the air chamber is only 45cc’s. This translates to about 33 shots before it falls off the reg. We are hunting in a target rich environment but in a perfect world I’d like to see a slightly larger air tube and at least 50 shots.

I’ve got well over 1000 pills down the pipe now and have tried many different pellets to see if it has any preferences. It certainly doesn’t like JSB 13 and 14 grain, Gamo RedFires or Poly Mags. It shoots JSB 18s OK but has a preference for JSB 15.89 and AA16s being the most accurate. CPHPs with a 5.52 head size we’re almost as accurate as the 16s but still suffer from the WTH occasional random fliers.

Bottom line, this rifle is a keeper filling a niche that I have been searching for. It’s not a 100Y bench gun nor is it a fire breathing 😮‍💨 slug hurler. It’s a close range 50Y and in pest blaster that knows its job and does it quietly and quite well. Perhaps 🤔 it’s a rifle that you are looking for too? Only you know what you are looking for.

Thanks for the write up. Did you experiment with any low power tunes at all while you were messing around?
I did but honestly I don't remember the target results nor did I save those targets. Its calling for rain here for the next few days but when it clears up I will try to get some results for you. Are you looking for crono numbers or for target pics?

More just general suggestions on ammo/fps that works well for a pure backyard tune --- I'm gunna try have have two tunes for mine when I get it, one at that slightly over 700 sweet spot for hunting/pesting and one for quiet.

Not really sure where to start pmaying around for the low power one :)

OK, I was able to find about a half hour of free time today to get you some numbers. Keep in mind this was from my current tune for CPHPs and I did NOT adjust anything other than the transfer port.

Conditions were pretty poor, mid 40’s, 13 MPH wind gusting to 24. I was more concerned with getting Chrono numbers and not shooting for accuracy and I did not hold off for wind. Target was 25 yards from my bench.

The pellets that show some promise at lower power is AA Falcon, AA16, JSB 15.89 and AA18. Any of these could clearly be tuned to shoot better but my gun is currently tuned for CPHPs on HI power and that is where it’s staying for now for my pesting hunting trips.

My numbers for FX 18 were puzzling. I had almost identical numbers at both medium and high power settings. I shot them twice to verify the numbers.

Hey man this is really great info, thank you very much for taking the time.

Really seems all over the place and very pellet dependent. Obviously something that needs to be played with.

How was the sound on low?

Mine comes april 17 or 18, and I'm gunna have a mess of ammo to try, so...

I don’t shoot it without a LDC. It’s pretty loud without one. Definitely not backyard friendly. It’s quiet at any power level with a LDC and setting behind the gun I can’t hear any volume difference at any power level.

I bought this to hunt with and to use CPHPs exclusively. It will shoot more precisely with a few other pellets but it’s minute of pigeon at 60Y with CPHPs and that’s what matters to me.

Keep in mind that I shot this with a FX Chrono hanging on the end so that effects the harmonics so don’t take my quickly shot targets as the best that this rifle is capable of because it can do much better in better conditions with a better tune for the pellet that you want to shoot.

He did say there were wind gust from 13 to 24 mph… Looking forward to your impressions of yours when it arrives.

I didn't mean all over the place in terms of good bsd, but rather some pellets did much better wide open, and some better restricted.

I'll post up about it when I've wrung it out a bit. I anticipate liking it, but mising semi auto next time I need to deal with a snake at night. I have a plan for that though, which involves the side pic rails on the Ranger :)

Steve Scally did an excellent review on this rifle and came to the conclusion that this rifle shoots the most accurately when it’s tuned around 700 FPS (+or- 20) for the pellet that you choose to shoot. If you noticed my Chrono numbers very few were close to that number so the accuracy suffers.
FWIW there is some, but not that much, overlap between your test pellets and they ones I'll be trying.

JSB, CPHP in common, but I've got no FX/AA.

I do have two daystate rebrands, one made by JSB and one by H&N, some regular RWS, some Norma branded RWS coming and some predator GTOs coming.

Very curious about a low power GTO tune for bsckyard short range.....

BTW, I've had zero success with H&N pellets out of any of my guns over the years. I'm not sure why because visually they seem very well made but none of my .22's have liked them for whatever reasons?
I'm still laughing about "WTH occasional random fliers". I shoot them in my Prod and they are surprisingly accurate in it, not the case for the rest of my guns, but occasionally I'm like WTH! Where did that come from!

@Larcat Are you planning to use an LDC on yours? What distance are you shooting in your backyard? Do you have neighbors that you don't want to hear you shooting?

I've never used the GTOs either so I'm no help there.

Also, I have shot Hades through mine and they do fairly well too but I forgot to shoot those yesterday.
I'm getting the Ranger, so it somes with the small 0db and I'm planning on using that.

My neighbors aren't up in arms about airguns, two I've talked about it with, but the one I share the largest border with is basically noncommunicative. I doubt he gives a flying, but I try to be polite above all else with this hobby :)

My max in the backyard is 35 yards. If I really wanted to I could go to 40, but I like sitting on the porch ;)

I really am looking forward to more land someday.

Well I had a small issue with Tiny. I removed it from the safe a couple weeks ago and the tank was empty? I’ve never had any problems with it until then. It’s been flawless. So, I emailed AOA and asked if they had any suggestions. They said the two most common issues for leaks with that model are either the seal beneath the air gauge or the o-ring at the end of the threaded adapter that the gauge screws into. So, I aired it up, slid the dust cap off and brushed some Dawn dish soap around those two areas and bingo, found it leaking at the threaded adapter.

Next I unscrewed the gauge slowly to de-gas. After the gauge was out, I unscrewed the threaded adapter and replaced the o-ring with a 2mm x 11.5mm. Applied some silicone oil and reassembled all parts, aired it up, checked for leaks and found none. Put it in the safe and took it out today and it didn’t lose any air.

We are getting ready to head back to the dairy in the morning so I decided to check the 25 yard zero on “Tiny” and it’s spot on. I’ve been shooting 18 grain JSB’s but decided to try some Hades. They were shooting too hot at the 18 grain tune so I backed the HS adjuster off a few clicks which their speed down to 698 FPS then I proceeded to drop 20 shots into the hole below.
