Do not despair. I have used free beanbag Styrofoam beads and packing peanuts successfully for 5 years. It is not a big deal to add a handful once a year to allow for compaction. I prefer to use my energy to shoot so I try to pack light.

I cut an exercise mat into small chunks with a utility knife in 10 minutes. Cheapest, lightest bag filler I have ever used. Very comfortable.

what make of exercise mat and how thick was it
These are the mats I got. Half off because a forklift had skewered the package. They have them in black for floors of gym/exercise areas. All the same type of foam. Wish I had thought of it years ago.
