Burris XTRIII Scope

I was researching eye box information and came across this scope. Anyone have hands on experience with the Burris XTR III 5.5-30x56 version? Seems to be highly respected in the powder burner arena. Value for the money? Something better for the money? I have old eyes, wear trifocals and shooting targets only - not hunting. Don’t really want to spend close to $1,400 but might consider it if it seemed to be worth it.

I once had a Burris Veracity 4.5 x 20 x 50, which had pretty dang good glass (made in the Philippines), not sure where the glass was made?
It was an excellent scope, very bright sight picture, fairly hefty though. I sold it simply because of the reticle, I like a full tree and it wasn't a full tree on the Burris.
Leupold is ultimately my goal to own (made in USA), but I need to save my pennies to do so.
For now, I have a Tract Toric (made in Japan), which works very well too.
From my research, the XTRIII scopes are supposedly made in USA however, so they have me looking closely at them. Plus, they now make a full tree, so intrigued.

I dont have experience with the xtr3 but I have the xtr3 pro version. From the reviews I've read the xtr3 is a wonderful scope and compares closely with the pro model. I wouldn't hesitate to order another pro and I like the pro so much I've been doing my best to not order a illuminated version of the xtr3 to compare it to. Hope this helps.

I THINK I read that this model is made in the USA and has Japan glass. Very tempting!

PRS shooters on the Snipers Hide forum love these XTR3 scopes. I've wanted one since they came out but I already have Athlon Cronus G2's, and some other even higher grade scopes, so I suppose I'll never get one. Ha, just yesterday I attempted talking my good friend into getting one but he decided to go for the Athlon Ares ETR 3-18x50 instead.

I think 2024 will have a G3 Cronus showing up which might be my time to continue my upgrades.

Right now the Vortex Razor G3 6-36x56 is supposed to be the best value as far as competing with tier 1 scopes. I almost got one when they were on sale for $2000.

I just won a Razor gen III 6-36 at RMAC, it sure is a lot of scope!

For $2000 the razor with be hard to beat but good luck finding that price in stock and depending on your weight requirement she's a chunky one.

If you are already having trouble spending money on a xtr3 then you should strongly consider the athlon cronus g2 also like steve mentioned. I would also look on euro optic at the demo section, dvor, midway, snipershide classifieds just to name a few place you can find a deal if price is a concern. If you find a dealer like cameraland, maybe they can send you some samples and then you send back what you didn't like and you aren't really out any money and you get to see them 1st hand. Most brands worth a damn will have lifetime no bs warranties so buying used shouldn't be a concern either.

I just picked up another athlon ares 4.5-30x56 on this forum for $800 shipped a few days ago. There's deals to be had if look for them and you can sell for what you paid if you buy for a good price if you don't care for it.

Some people might have different eyes than yours and you might prefer something different to what their eye likes. I like my xtr3 pro but I also like my athlon ares etr's for around half the cost. You'll have to try a few to find what is worth it to you.

Just dont put anything on a pedestal until you see it yourself. I bought a sightron s8, and while I like it, I feel as the zoom range gets above 30 or so it starts to struggle pretty bad in dimmer conditions. In my mind when I ordered it I figured it would be near perfect all the way to max zoom, but it wasn't, and I have pretty good eyes. I still enjoy using it but I wouldn't be heart broken if I had to sell it for 2 $1000 scopes.

what scopes are you currently using and what have you looked through that you thought was good or bad or just ok?

hope everyone is having a good evening 🙏

You almost gotta look thru these things to be sure. Leupold gets a bad wrap on forums for this & that but my Leupold's smoke my Sightron SIII fixed 20x as glass goes. Any Leupold of any vintage I have does. I'm pretty sure you can find a decent deal on that Burris if patient of used list at the usual spots. I'm seriously thinking to go Leica in march 24 but probably way sooner. Meopta has my curiousity up bigtime also ....
Some Steiner is built in that Burris plant also I think.
SFP for me.. I have no need for FFP at this point
