Caldwell Lead Sled DFT 2 Or Caldwell Rock BR With Rear Bag?

I've had pretty good luck with the Vanguard Ready-Aim so far. The thing I like about it is that it lets you shoot downhill, level or uphill. I shoot from a 2 story window sometimes and I have my targets placed across the creek with a long downhill slope so sometimes I am shooting at 45 yards at a target that is 40 to 45 feet below my window. Most shooting rests wont allow you that much flexability at a downward angle. If you have it on a solid table, I'm sure it will fill the bill for what you want to do with it. Of course, you wont have the ability to follow moving critters with it ... if that is what you want, I would go with a good bi-pod or the Rock BR.

Whoops ... my bad ... the name of that rest is Vanguard Steady-Aim ... not ready-aim. I was lookin over at it when writing the above post and one of the tie down straps was covering the St on the name and I was thinking it was a R before the eady that I could see ... sorry about that ... Amazon has it in stock for less that $90 if you might be interested ... along with a couple of videos of the product ... also some on YouTube.

One of the main reasons to use a rest is to have constancy in the position of the weapon when firing. Unfortunately, what works well at the range, may not work well in the field. Based on that, I try to use the same supporting devices in both instances. For me, that's light-weight bean bags, and not a 20 pound, fully loaded, lead sled.

I have both but that’s because I started with a lead sled and when I got into LRT I bought a Rock and rear bag for serious bench shooting. I still like my Lead Sled for zeroing in my Rifles because it’s a more stable and solid platform which eliminates a few things like flinching, breathing, shaking, then it’s all the Rock after that and practice practice practice....
I should add that after I’ve zero’d in a rifle I’ll also just go with a good bipod rather then getting out the rock.

I'll cast my vote for Rock BR and rear bag. I've done a lot more PB shooting so far than air rifle to date, but the Rock BR and rear bag set up is what I have found to work the best for me. I used to use a lead sled back East when sighting in 12ga slug gun, and then when I first moved out to MT for the .338 win mag, but I have always found the BR and rear bag set up the most accurate for me.

I sold my Lead sled in favor of having a bipod attached to each of my rifles and just use a rear bag. I've shot one 250 card at 25 meters this way so far and several 247's & 248's.

I kept my P3 though, but have never used it for shooting from. Although it looks like it would do the trick?

To answer your question I would choose the Rock over the sled. But would choose attached bipod over both.

I've been using BR adjustable rest front and smooth leather or slippery synthetic for the rear bag. At one time, I dusted both with talc - it makes a difference.

I think just about all guns shoot better off bags than with a bipod, some more so, than others. My Sako A1 triple deuce is an anomaly in this, but it is easier to shoot 1/4" groups

at 100meters off bags than pod. It will do it from the bipod, but it is easier with bags. Of course, it is all about vibration and vibration absorption. The lower the velocity (ex-sub

sonic) the longer the barrel time effecting thus the more critical vibrations and vibration absorption becomes.
