Tuning Caliber choice for EFT

I’m attending my first EFT event in Leesburg Fl, 1-3 Dec this year and in preparation for this event I need to convert my Ghost or my Alphawolf to a larger caliber than .177.
Anyone have thoughts on what caliber to use based on your direct EFT experience?
I already know that my .177 even shooting the 16.1’s ain’t the best choice 🫤
.22?
.25?
.30?
Of course the Alphawolf is much easier to tune on the fly than the Ghost but ….?

If I heard correctly, the Florida match will be using the same targets as EBR a few weeks ago. I shot the American FT event @ EBR and used a .20 @ 29fpe. I finished fifth and got a check but had five targets that were kill zone hits that didn't go down. Those 5 cost me second place, and a bigger check.

More energy is better. A .22 shooting 25.4gr at 950-960, or a .25 shooting 34s @ 890-900 would be my recommendation.

I have shot many EFT matches with my 25 cal crown (Skeletor) shooting the 34’s….but last year I picked up a 30 ghost and haven’t even pulled old Skeletor out of the cabinet. I have introduced a few people to EFT with them shooting Skeletor and 2 of them have bought PCP’s…..both Skeletor and Specter (Ghost) have won a few matches….

Was it more of a difference in platform or did you prefer the 30 caliber and why? If you had the ghost in 25 caliber would you use it just as much for eft?

Skeletor is in the Saber Tactical stock and it is very easy to shoot off of bucket/sticks and even the bench. It is a very accurate rifle. I bought a 22 cal carbine ghost for hunting and LOVED the platform . I traded in a rifle and got a 30 cal ghost which took over the EFT and the bench spot. Very accurate and I really liked the way the ghost feels.

Being right handed and having the cocking lever on the left means I have full control of the rifle with my "strong hand" on the pistol grip at all times. I prefer the cocking lever on the left for bucket and sticks and even the bench. I can't do this with my crown, but I sure wish I could.

From what I have read the 25 is not as accurate off the bench at 100 yards, but in EFT you aren't trying to X ring each target. A hit on the paddle will knock it down with no problem. I do not have "real world" experience with the 25 cal in the ghost platform.

The wife shot her 22 ghost at EBR this year in the one gun challenge and did very well. We just put a 177 carbine barrel on it and now she will be shooting it for HFT this year instead of her Huntsman.

Hope this helps.

The targets that will be used in FL are NOT the same remote reset targets used at EBR EFT event. They are the older targets with the string to reset that AoA has.
As far as caliber, .22 high power (RDMs) and .25 Heavy are good choices. They’ll knock over the target when you hit the kill zone as long as you don’t bring a knife to a gun fight and shoot under 30 fpe.
.30 is also a good choice but it has a few disadvantages. First, the BC (unless shooting the newer 56 grain ZANs) is less than the RDM .22 or .25 King Heavy. Second, they are larger and on the smaller KZs are slightly harder to get through the hole. An advantage I see with .30 is that it has more power, so a better chance of knocking down a target that isn’t quite working correctly, and it’s much easier to see your misses with the .30.
Overall I’d say the .25 Heavy is the best overall compromise.

Based not only on correct power, accuracy, and shot-count parameters, I've never had any trouble finding .25 caliber ammo. Correction- the right .25 caliber ammo for EFT; 33.95 JSBs. That's not always the case with the other calibers. 🤬🤬🤬

I can tell you from (TOO) poignant experience(s) that .22 Redesigns of different vintages averaged between 3/4 and 4 MOA PLUS at 100 yards in my (now replaced with a .25) Red Wolf.
