Chambering in .270

Question for you all, two actually, for awhile now I’ve been intrigued with the idea of converting a existing PCP platform to .27 cal. Just plain curiosity based on the accuracy and flat shooting characteristics of a powder burner in .270. I’ve reached out to several companies to see about acquiring a custom barrel in .270 for my Synrod with no joy in that pursuit. Of course receiver would also need to be machined. So question #1 what is the consensus on a .270? I think it would have merit, probably take a existing platform in .30 or .357, using the power plant and just changing barrel/receiver to .270. That is if no one has already done it but I never recall seeing one. Secondly what rate of twist would optimize the performance in a PCP platform?

IMHO I really think taking the accuracy of a .25 with the added mass of a .270. combining that with the higher velocity and proper rate of twist, which I think would be key to its performance, could be a showstopper of a combination and hopefully be a pretty flat shooter out to 100 yds+. Of course having it regulated would be a must too.

Lastly any ideas on a gunsmith who might be willing to produce a one off barrel/receiver combo?

I thought about this very same idea. I have good tj barrel .257 shooters in airforce platforms. 1.1 ltr tanks big valve etc. Only this is to do a regulator it needs a big prechamber. Then also experiment with twust rates to stabilize a dpecif weight slug in that caliber. Also who makes molds currently for .270 and what weights do they drop. Thats what youll have to work with and determine who makes a barrel with the twist rate for the weight then match up the speeds to make it all work. Pretty much only platform that will shoot 100+grn at 1000+fps with any good consistency is going to be the airforce guns. I have a lathe and a machist to machine barrels. I could help. Send me a pm

airforce would be a could platform to experiment with due to their ability to swap calibers on base platform, didn’t think of them. As for molds I don’t know off hand if any are currently available, my thoughts were just plain round ball for proof of concept stage. Would be easy enough to have one made if need be, or custom swedge to run some .32 special wad cutters or such at first. i even tossed the idea of a sabot type round for initial testing. first trial rate of twist around 17” in a 18“ to 20” barrel, 1100fps 90grn slug
