Is silicone oil or grease ok for breech seal lubrication or stick with Ballistol?

The Hoppes #9 debate is a false flag, it's just fine on o-rings and airgun bores.

I use Balistol a lot but when stubborn leading is present, I'll break out the Hoppes.

For my guns and my customers guns, metal to metal contact points, pins etc get 30W non-detergent motor oil, springs get light machine oil, bores get cleaned and waxed, o-rings in assembly get lubri-film silicone grease and everyday lube is a few dropps of silicone oil in the air-port when filling.

I use silicone oil on my breech seals and it works fine.

If you are new to airguns I’d suggest using a PatchWorm to clean the barrel. That company sells Balistol and also Prolix which works great the clean the pipe and their heavier viscosity Prolix works great to lube the breech o-ring. Both products will work but Balistol odor flat out smells horrible.

I have a severely compromised smell sense and I can still smell the stench of it. I know many others use it without a bother but it’s not for me.

I hate the smell of Balistol but I use it and definitely recommend it. Hoppes #9 has a lovely smell and I use it for fouling in my powderburners, buy never tried it on my airguns.

it smells of pine thats for sure. i use it for all my guns along with silicon where applicable

Due to being an owner of an "Umbrella Cockatoo" all products with Chemical Smells I use outside. Bad for the Bird's Raspatory System.

Prolix has a very pleasant odor. Works great on powder burners to remove carbon as well.

Same too I use silicone oil on my breech seals it works great.

The Hoppe's Elite is as least as good as old #9 and has zero odor. It's all I use anymore.

I read that oven cleaning products can kill pet birds. Think of it as Canary in Coal Mine; breathing those fumes isn’t good for people, either.

Ballistol smells awful, but at least it doesn’t keep me from sleeping after using it, like CLP does. There must be something that causes increased heart rate and respiratory rate in the latter. Even though CLP smells less awful (to me).

We used to have a big metal wash tub and a pressurized hose that shot out CLP for cleaning our weapons in the Army lol

Dow 33 works best for most rings.
