Does anyone have a recommendation as to which compressor is most reliable for filling large tanks,(74 cu ft). As expensive as they are, I do t want to make a mistake in purchasing.

My Yong Heng does not have a problem with my 45 minute SCBA tank, I think it's 66 ft3. I am sure it would do a 74 ft3 bottle. I've added cooling and an additional moisture filter. And good oil. 3 years and counting.

I would like to find a good used one if its out there but my problem is that I am a newbie on the forum and by rules I have to accumulate multiple posts before I can buy or communicate with sellers

Those rules exist to protect all of us. Once you’ve been here for a little while, you’ll appreciate them too. They really aren’t that onerous – just participate in a few good threads, wait 10 days, and you should be good to go.

Well now you’re raising your limit to $1500. One compressor I hear GRAT reviews about is the Hill compressor.
I see no reason that would not make a fine unit for you. The pic I posted is priced very good but if you shop around
you maybe able to find one lower cost, but the ones I see were a few $100 higher. I hope someone that has one

Where at in Texas are you, I have a Sheldon compressor that just stopped on me, Paid like 1,800 for it 15 years ago, I am sure some one could fix it I am all thumbs ,, And I just bought a new Alkin...

My experience with a brand new Omega Turbo Charger ran me out of the PCP arena a few years ago. Sold off everything. I'm glad they hold up for others. The maker finally said "I didn't use mine often enough".

Yes Hill compressor will do tanks with ease. For the price range your looking at it should serve you well.

Three or four years ago I made the investment in an Alkin W31 - turned my hobby into a real pleasure.....
I topped off a 4500 PSI tank the other day for a friend that was a little over half empty in 7 minutes with dry air.

Another happy Omega Supercharger user here. I keep a 74 CF, a 97 CF, a 3L and 2L filled with it. 17hrs on the run clock and no issues so far.
