Confirmed lethality of Vulcan 3 700 mm in .30 Cal and JSB Hades on white tail deer.

As far as expansion goes, this is about the same as I have seen when testing then in ballistics gel. At "normal" pellet speeds, in gel or animals, the Hades do not open up or petal out like they do when shot at high "slug" speeds. What they do for hunters at either low or high speed is create three hydrostatic shock waves at those hollow cavities that disrupt tissue and cause hemorrhaging. This picture is an example of what these types of hollow cavities do in game at higher speeds. It is from the Lehigh Defense Extreme Penetrator bullet in gel (picture from the web). There's some pretty cool videos and images of this newer bullet design. I think this style of slug is the way to go with deer because it damaged like a hollow point but penetrates better, and with a heavier weight of slug should exit so there's two holes.

I've seen different: in 20% gel, this .30 cal Hades opens up nicely but penetrates to only 6-7" (whereas the Exact Diabolo of the same weight does not expand and penetrates to 10-12") at impact speeds around 850-875fps. I haven't personally shot any animals with it though. Really strange it did not open up in deer. Well I guess it's because the deer are not made of gel.

I have shot several deer with my .40, .45 and .50 cal air rifles. Some I shot in the head and they dropped on the spot. Some hart and lung shots left the deer close to where it stood. Some I blew through both lungs and they ran a couple hundred yards. If you have the property to track them, that’s good. Having snow sure helps tracking. Laying down is a definite plus. Glad you found your deer. But I believe a large drain hole on both sides is the best bet. Just saying, A great shot doesn’t prove all outcomes will be the same.

I am so sorry that the shot on the deer was not at par with the experiments and test on gel. That deer for sure did not know what resistance ought to have to equal the gel. Expansion of the hades would be the one shown by the gel, I know. That would had been educated. Sorry for my mistake and sorry for the deer to have disappointed gel makers !

Maybe the error was in shooting at 1.100 fps and not at 870 fps …. Maybe…

Impressive you took a deer with a .30 PELLET. That's nuts. I'm also surprised that pellet barely deformed! That's not what people expect from the Hades when they buy them.

Don't worry about the ethics police. In a SHTF scenario... I'd take a deer with a small yet air rifle it I had to. This forum would lose their mind to watch Tim Wells take large game with a blow dart gun lol. I think it looks like fun. Others cry it's not ethical.

Here's a couple of Hades .30 and .22 shot at 875fps into 20% ballistics gel. There is definitely some expansion there at that speed, especially in the heavier .30 caliber. It is the lighter .22 that does little expanding. But again, it is the hyrostatic shock at the three wound channels from the triangle shaped divots where these do their job with this pellet. That deer quickly walking away and dying is proof positive of that. Here's another video of that Vulcan in action.

Do not forget that a .30 Cal pell has the same diameter than a .308 an a 30-06. Difference is in shape, material and fps.

Agree on the topic of deformation, I would expect much more, but …… Internal bleeding was remarkable! ….. The shape of the tip for sure cause so big damage in tissue to cause the bleeding.

Agree !

What I have noticed is that the deer will not run after receiving the shot if the rifle is not loud. It will just walk very few steps before having to bed.

The main inconvenience to hunt deer with an air rifle is that you double the bet: Not just to see the deer, it has to be so close! …. The possibilities of being able to hunt a very good horned buck with an air rifle are almost none In normal conditions.

Then you glance again to the powder burner….

It's not the velocity... With this pellet at 1,100 fps at the muzzle it would drop to right around 875fps at 50 yards anyway. Clearly not a ballistic deer, lol.

Gel has a constant resistance, the body of a deer has diverse densities (skin, ribs, flesh, lungs, inter chest space (cavity with no tissue or resistance), then again ribs and flesh and skin.

A dead deer hanged offers real world ballistic deformation. Gel is just comparable with same density of gel.

The traps that I use at home are made of steel with inclination. Pellets and slugs end as flat as a thin coin. Hunting is another reality.

Your comment is absolutely precise in regard of what I observed in the autopsy,
