Consideration for others when selling!!

It would be so nice when a person have several things to sell if they would list all in one ad. When you list separately you just knock someone else off the first page sooner. Just saying!

A part of the problem is a half page of pinned posts taking up space on the first page of the classified. Thankfully this was recently changed. The only pinned posts I can think of relevant to the classifieds are the classified rules and the scammers list. When there are a lonnnng series of pinned posts at the top of the classifieds first page this causes several recent ads to be pushed back to the next page rather quickly. We have little control over that.

Since you brought it up, let’s talk about this “consideration” thing you mentioned in the title. We may as well address the folks regularly mucking up the classified section with old ads where typed out “[-S-O-L-D-]” as opposed to using the drop down menu to select [SOLD] from the menu so that their ads can be placed at the end of the active ads. Some folks also leave ads marked [SPF] after the deal goes through or falls through. I think many of these types come here to sell, get their money, and log out without tending to their ads. There are also those who can’t or don’t sell items and their ads get pushed back a couple of pages within a couple days. Consequently, some of these sellers post the a new ad for the same item without waiting 7 days for their older ad to expire. Some of these members won’t delete their old ad(s) and it’s funny because if you pay attention you may see that they may change the price(s) in the new ad. Then you have members who come along and blatantly step on the next guy’s toes by placing an ad for the exact same item (or a very similar item) that someone posted earlier in the day in attempt to undercut them. It’s quite oblivious that this is the case because many members have been sitting on these items for a while and don’t post a sale ad until someone else does. Then all of a sudden they decide to sell? Think it’s a coincidence? At times this causes more people to do the same. If there’s been consideration for other members in the classifieds section I see very little evidence of it. Looks cutthroat to me.

Furthermore, AGN administrators have implemented rules and policies to help them keep the classifieds and the site organized so we as members can have convenient and relatively easy access to information, vetted vendors, and services. Flouting the rules by not familiarizing ourselves with them or just being plain lazy makes more work for administrators, other members, and mucks up the forums and site for everyone.

This is a problem on almost all of these types of sites. We have had the same discussion on Archery Talk. One really good thing about this site is, that you cannot comment directly within the ad. It really keeps the responses like "it's only $10 more on such and such a site" and "good luck getting that price". Overall, this is one of the better moderated classified sites I have been on. You will never get everyone to follow up on their posts.

Keep up the good work, and thanks for all the moderators that work on this site.

@Martin3528 The moderators do a good job on this site. And disabling comments in the classifieds was a smart move. What I was getting at is members taking more accountability. As I mentioned, some folks come here just to sell airgun related items. They are often obvious and very easy to spot. I don’t expect much from them other than a quick series of fluff posts and an ad or questions about how to post an ad. Considering them as a factor, everyone won’t adhere to rules. You are correct it is unrealistic to expect everyone to do anything. But when regular sellers and long-time members also contribute to the issue of mucking up the classified, something can be done. Many of them know what to do. This and other things I mentioned create unnecessary work for administrators. Maybe some of them could use a reminder. In regards to consideration, there is a dearth of it from what I can see. I’m pretty sure I was clear on these points. I’m not trying to make excuses for these folks.

I just wish this site had categories like archery talk. I don’t know, maybe some of those types of comments being allowed would bring some sellers back to reality. You know the ones that want 300 plus shipping for their used avenger. Lol.

The rules say if you delete your ad you get punished.

Putting all your stuff in one ad and editing it would be the considerate thing to do.

Categories would make sense for users but not for the low to no maintenance way the mod;s want run it.

i don't recall seeing anything in the rules against relisting an ad before the 14 days are up.

Ad "seniority"? Seriously? Old guys own the turf and new guys aren't allowed to post a similar item? Especially not for a lower price?

No typing needed for title.

I'm not a fan of ANYTHING that interferes with a free market economy. Be it at scale or a simple "classifieds" section on a board. Makes no difference - I want access to all of the goods I might want to buy and I want fair time for anything I'd like to sell as well.

I'm not naming sites, but I'll say this site's classifieds are better moderated than most. Running a "Classifieds" section is a pain in the ass. It's almost a punishment when the board gets BIG.

@doubloon This isn’t collegiate level mathematics. This segment of the rules seems logical. Some things can be inferred relatively easily. Leave a post up for 14 days (excuse me I’d previously said 7). If you delete content you face punishment. Maybe simply asking a moderator to delete your ad if you want to delete it early would help. If they do it, they do it. If not then wait for the ad to expire. “After the 14-day period you may re-list your item/ad.” I did not highlight that portion on the photo.

To me this implies that members are to post one ad for an item (or items) once every two weeks unless the ad is locked. It also explains how ads become locked. If I’ve misunderstood something please correct me. If you have more specific questions consider contacting a moderator. For my purposes in using that forum, my understanding has served me well. I’ve gotten what I wanted out of the classifieds with very little difficulty. I would, however, like others to have the same type of experience. I am of the opinion that we can all do our part to help improve that forum as well as others.
