Coyote #9 - finally

@BlackICE. Thank you for the suggestion. Yes, I am only looking for head shot that is available. I have a mixed feeling about shooting a higher calibre gun. I don't want to take it for granted that because I have a much powerful gun that I could just sling off a shot thinking that the coyote would drop with a body shot to the heart or lung. For me personally, I strive to hit a small intended target area whenever possible. If the shot opportunity isn't there, then I wait for another chance.

Once again, being a sportsman has zero to do with coyotes. They are a pest and don’t belong on an ethical pedestal. Don’t confuse them with game animals and sportsmen. I save all my morals and ethics for game animals. The line between a coyote and a deer is not blurry for me. But yes, I’ve commented on the just hit something at extreme distance thing too. It is a theme with airgun guys shooting at stuff beyond their talent or equipment capabilities. Max wasn’t. A hit is not a win for a large percentage of us.
A true sportsman counts his achievements in proportion to the effort involved and fairness of the sport. - S. Pope

IMHO Max's attempts to kill coyotes in a location that doesn't require handicapping himself with his tool of choice is part of the definition of a Sportsman. Your clearly stated lack of ethics doesn't really apply...Does it?

The assertion that simply putting a hole in the face of a coyote is a lethal hit simply means that there is little comprehension of anatomy on AGN.

You’re painting with a broad brush with that last statement. Yes, there are definitely guys who jumped on owning a totally cool airgun and don’t have any experience with hunting and the proper guidance by an experienced hunter to teach them. There’s also no shortage of guys that YouTube vidiots blasting stuff took the place of their dad. But I think a large percentage of us know we are underpowered for anything bigger than a tweety bird and become well aware of the anatomy of the things we pursue.

I personally try with airguns to do what I do when I hunt with real guns. I always use more than I need. With hunting live animals, we know why. Unless safety prevents it.

There is also a great difference in "Hunting" and "Sitting over a Bait Pile". They are not the same. JMO YMMV
IMHO, it still takes time, patience and skill. I sit on my butt for ground squirrels, waiting for them to pop up, sometimes 50 yards sometimes 125 yards. I'm not going to fault Max for waiting for a coyote to make a guest appearance from a good perch, much like a deer hunter would.

So, like Hunting over a Deer Feeder?
We can’t let what’s legal and our own personal hunting ethics go any farther than just simply not agreeing about the issue. I personally think hunting deer over a feeder is a complete joke. But in the state where my camp is, it’s completely legal. I let three guys hunt my place that are from that state. They don’t know any other way to hunt and only one seems to be starting to realize there might be alternative methods that are more effective but harder and more rewarding. He knows what I take off the property and is now asking questions. As I let each one on, they brought what I call their Ohio deer kit. A feeder, a camera to point at it, a ladder stand and a crossbow. The good thing is I know where those guys are hunting at all times. They don’t interfere with me and my buddies. Plus they seem happy. I personally have no issue with baiting a pest to control the population. With coyotes, a guy needs all the help he can get. The only side effect of baiting pests is while you think you’re helping matters, sometimes an abundance of food kicks their breeding into overdrive. So you wind up going in circles. But these are just my feelings on the matter and nobody is legally forced to agree with me.

Anyone who cares about a coyote and having an ethical shot clearly doesn't own livestock or other animals that have been attacked or killed by them. Around here there is zero remorse for them. Getting a shot on them is good enough for us. We prefer to kill them and drop dead right there but if not oh well. They might die later and suffer but what they do have zero care in the world. They don't care if our calves suffer getting tails eaten off or legs eaten to the bone. Or killing them.

Max is doing his best to take them as cleanly as possible with what he has. No issues there. Personally shot one with a .22lr pistol recently. Didn't drop him dead and he took off running but I can guarantee his ass never came back. That's all I care about.
