Coyotes Keep Coming Here 2 Die

Nice shot! Seems coyotes don't do the death dance like raccoons do with the brain shot.
The skull on a coyote is wafer thin. It doesn't take much to pop. So at about 70lbs energy it seems to dump all of it into the head. Almost every shot did not pass through.

With that, I prefer hollow points. I've shot quite a few now into the skull, front side or rear. What I have noticed is that I prefer that head shot when at close range because unless you miss (or barely hit which is equivalent to a miss) they'll drop instantly. If they run off, you probably didn't hit it square or were not using enough energy. Thin skull easy to penetrate but target area is small and animal seems to constantly move around making it easy to let one get away when you either take a bad shot or have the same result by luck.

Coons have thicker bones in the head and more muscle mass to penetrate. Different topic.

Too many people are fixated on energy. Yes, you need appropriate energy. On coyote head shots at close range I'd start at 50lbs and work up to 75 as I seem to get the most effective results when stepping into that range from different rifles and ammo. Less is more because I use less air and get more shots out of my air tank with the improved efficiency. It also makes less noise.. And noise level is very important for me. I want to be as quiet as possible. Noise is one reason I downsized from 35 to 25.

@sasquatch. Good shot placements. Yes, coyote's skull is very thin. I have shot 7 now, all with head shots and they didn't suffer long. My first coyote was shot with my Crown at 70 yards with 18gr pellet, 32ft.lb at the muzzle. I tapped it on the temple and it just died instantly. I got lucky with that shot. I have since switched over and designated my FX Impact MK2 to shoot 23gr slugs with 45ft.lb of energy. I have increased the power to 54ft.lb shooting the H&N 25gr Gen2 slugs. It is a much better power plant and I only go for head shots and nothing else. Obviously 25 or 30 calibre would be better, but IMO, shot placement is the key for me.

Here is the link to one of my coyote video if anyone interested to watch:

Good shooting @Max115. That shot placement is higher value than the energy.

@sasquatch. Thank you. I was very nervous with my first coyote shot, but I was very relieved and happy with the end result. Just like everything in life, having lots of practice with tons of target shooting and successfully tagging more coyotes, I became more experience and gained confidence with my tools and my ability to make the shot. I am now hunting for my coyote#8.

Another just came by. I filmed it but will update with more footage later of the body.

This one moved right when I was taking the shot and resulted in a body impact. It took a few to expire but he's no longer eating people's cats and harassing me when I walk my dog.

I'll leave this video unpublished as I intend to make a further update to it prior to publishing and putting on my channel

This is why I prefer higher than 50ft lbs. Sometimes the shots don't go as expected.

November Status---

Coyotes - 0
Airgun - 4

@sasquatch First time I’ve seen one drop from a body shot with an air rifle. Did it stay down? Looks like you got at least one lung. Thank you for sharing this. This is still a .25 I presume. Which projectile and weight did you use on that yote? Around what velocity and distance would you say the shot was?
