Crazy price of used guns

Quality work with quality parts tuned and assembled by a reputable shop or person having the credo that it has improved not only function but accuracy can indeed sell for close to invested monies IMO
Adding on a bunch of bling parts for looks and lets say ... cobbled together parts & pieces done in a blind faith attempt hoping for a better air gun ... Not so much

When it comes to tuning for me that can only result in negative. The negative comes in when internal changes are made. Then it’s a hard pass as who knows what you will get. I bought a mk2 impact once that had the hammer and spring heavied up. Not only did I have to change all that but the gun wouldn’t seal anymore at normal pressure because it got accustomed to 170 bar plus so a new valve and seat were also needed. Bone stock for me from now on.

I was curious as to what folks feel a "good discount" from the new list should be on a gun. I buy and sell (buy about 50% more than sell) a LOT, and I am, well, let's say VERY impulsive when something new and shiny launches, I am usually one of the first in line with the AMEX out and a smile on my face. I also tend to over buy certain brands/models (RAW, older FX, Kalibergun, and others), so I end up with multiples of the same gun, and when I see the boxes piling up, I tend to realize I do not need 3 HM100x.22, so I re-list one or two.

I feel like I am almost a bit too low on used guns, as once I purchase something, I just count that money as gone, when I sell, well, that is just a bit extra to recycle into something else and tend to get multiple responses in the first few minutes and a sale happens quckily.

New is where I struggle. I have a new Evol (newest with SUB MOA barrel, etc.) posted at roughly 20% of a discount from new. I by no means am married to that price, but would rather price it to sell in the first few days than have it linger. I get that not everyone is a buyer for every gun posted, but feel with what I buy new (high-end from reputable sellers, AoA, Utah, etc) that most members would see them as a good value. Some sell in 5 minutes, some sit for months, or never sell, so is that more just that folks want certain brands or models, or should things be priced at more of a discount off the bat to get more traction?

I am into the Evol I have listed for roughly 2800.00. Have it listed for 2300, would I sell for 1000.00, no, would I sell for 1950.00, most likely. I also know guys like to negotiate and have had more than one member get mad when I do not, so now I have built in a bit of a buffer to allow for some back and forth.

Long post for a simple question, I guess. What is the discount form list you feel is fair as a starting point when selling a new gun in the classifieds? Do you negotiate or just list it for what is a fair price?

Me tuning a gun vs Motorhead tuning a gun ..... who is going to get more money for their "tuned" gun? Yeah some random guy claiming to tune guns, with no back story, isn't going to add any value to the rifle. There are a few people in the classified that if you look at the original posting date...... are OVER A YEAR OLD!! They still have the *lower price* but the rifles are the same prices that they have been for well over a year. I just laugh at people like that.

People need to look at it this way........ like a brand new car. If you buy a new car off the lot with under 10 miles on it. As soon as you take the keys and drive it off the lot it is USED! Doesn't matter if you put on 20 miles or 200 miles......used is used. And don't think that just because they don't make the rifle anymore that it is a classic or "rare" gun. There is a reason why they are not made and are more of a novelty at this point in time. You will probably be able to find someone to buy it, but it could take some time as well. As a seller you need to figure the purchase price, or the current new price of the rifle. Then take around 30% off the price. Doesn't matter how many upgrades and extras you have will add next to nothing to the rifle. Most people want an unmolested rifle so they can modify their own rifles how they want.

The other thing that irritates me is when people plaster the classifieds with multiple threads. Put them all in one thread so you are not screwing other people.

No stranger than a new car losing 15% of its worth the second it's driven off the lot. I guess it's what the market will bear. If ANYONE is willing to pay the price others will try selling for the same or more. BTW, I'll still sell my FX Boss for $4,000!

After thinking on this for a bit...

It seems that many people want to treat tools as commodities. A commodity is something that makes a company (or person) money (because if it doesn't, then they won't make money). A tool is something that is used to accomplish a task.

My farm-think is that this tool will perform this task, so it's worth a certain amount at time of purchase. As long as the tool continues to work, it's value is assured.

"What it does is what it is." come to mind.

I have sold every gun I’ve ever listed almost instantly. I have been involved in expensive hobbies my entire life. In order to freely keep moving forward, sunken cost syndrome is something that doesn’t exist in my life. I recently sold my EVOL. It was a year old and cost me around $2,600. Sold it for $1,400. Also just sold a U2 that was around 2 months old. Paid $1,700, sold it for $1,000. There is a recipe to what ales you. You just cant care about what’s in your rear view mirror. Just stay focused on what’s through the windshield.

It seems like some people really hate to give the giant risk taking used buyers a “good deal” on something. I believe that partially stems from the fact they know they overpaid for the item. So someone else is going to have to take a hit also. But I personally believe the risky used buyer deserves a significant discount. Because I know I sure as hell hate purchasing stuff used. And I truly appreciate the used buyers on this forum freeing up the space in my gun safe.

I don’t ever want to be the guy with the money pit sitting on a shelf collecting dust because of some warped sense of value.

I hear you… personally, I sell at where I am comfortable buying. Depends on the rifle but I get the “used is used” so a “new” gun, meaning maybe a couple of months old and a few shots through it 25ish% discount over current new price (not MSRP…). If it is an exceptional gun, like you won the barrel lottery or something like that maybe 15-20%. An older model and used a bunch I’m in the 40-50% discount over current new camp. All shipped and not taking into account tax etc (lol…). Also get the buffer idea so that people can haggle but honestly I’d rather have a reasonable price tag from the get-go and shake hands…

My PB dealer told me that if I buy a brand new firearm from him, pay for it, but never take it out of the store, he considers it used and would give me 50 percent of what I just paid. Then sell it for 75 percent of new price. I think there's more profit in used guns for them.

Buy a Harley Davidson motorcycle for $25K and add $10k in chrome parts. You know what those chrome parts are worth? Diddly squat.
