Crosman Challenger shooting Domed Pellets at 10-Meters

Hello everyone,

I had ordered 8 new different .177 cal Domed pellets under 8gr weight to shoot in my Crosman Challenger and Daisy Model 599 at both 10-meters and 25-yards. Received them in yesterday afternoon and numbered all of the Tins and added them to my pellet list. This morning I got all the Paper Targets ( Pellet Comparison Second Target ) taped on to some cardboard backing and ready to clamp on to my 10-Meter frame. Note: the solid black bullseye is only 1/8-inch in diameter for reference.

I cleaned the barrel bore and topped off the cylinder to 3,000psi and shot 8 rounds of the first three pellets. I have labeled each Brand and Weight for the pellet used on each line. I pushed a clean Swab down the bore and again topped off the cylinder to 3,000psi and shot the second card. Used the same procedure on card number three for the last two pellets.

I have attached a scanned photo of each card and you can see what pellets shot poorly and which ones shot really well. Too much wind today to repeat this test on the 25-yard range but I will in time and will share the results here on the Forum.

I shot theses targets from inside my house to the outside target frame. I shot from a bench using bags and a bag jack.

Rifle: Crosman Challenger .177cal
Pellets: see photos
Distance: 10-Meters
Wind: 10-15mph

Hope this information will be of some help.

It’s surprising how that rifle lets you know what it likes. I hate to say it, but those JSBs look pretty much the best choice. I want to hate JSB because they have such poor quality control, but they still come through in the end. Good exercise Thomas. Keep us updated in your search for the holy grail pellet.

Hello @rsfrid

I cannot wait for a low wind day to shoot all of these at the 25-yard range. I will do close to the same exercise but will shoot a full 20 bullseye on the General Target for each pellet. The ole "shoot, clean, recharge" routine and will be able to tell pretty quick which one(s) will make the cut. At 10-meters the rifle does not like the H&N Baracuda Green  and I might not even try it at 25. I will share the results when it happens.

Great info Thomas T. I also have the same Challenger 2021, never cleaned the barrel,my shots are at 25 yds.
I started with flathead pellets,AA Field Heavy 10.3,H&N heavy match 8.18 ,RWS Professional 8.2. Vogel Match 8 gr.
Then I went to dome JSB 7.33 AA field heavy10.3
The flatheads were better, not by much though.
What I have found out is the 2021 is not fussy, though some pellets are better than others and worth finding out.
I sure like mine,, got it because I knew it was accurate, adjustable, lots of shots, and easy to hand pump.
Finally have a day without Rain, wind, and Mother Nature kicking asx,so you have encouraged me to go shoot the 2021 today, Thank you.
ps,the RWS Super Domes used to be my go-to pellet, and still is for .22, it shoots well in all my .22, but now the Voget Match is my go-to in.177.
I say this because both types are good in anything I shoot and are a good starting point to find better shooting pellets.
One does not need to spend "BoKoo" on a good accurate PCP just get yourself the above Crosman
Oh, all my shots are less than 1/2 "...so today will Try to keep better track of what I am shooting and get pictures.I have a Bushnell Engage scope on mine,a nice setup and scope.

;)

Hello @boscoebrea

Thank for your info also. This is a new rifle for me, just over one month, and I just enjoy shooting this thing so much. I have almost stopped shooting all of my other guns because it shoots so well, easy to handle and about half of the time I use my Vevor Compressor to fill it up. I am not sure how many shots I get per fill but it is waaaaay over 100. I start at 3,000 psi and shoot forever and when it finally gets down below 2,000psi , I refill. Fun, fun, fun. :p

Hello @BlindPig95

I created that target and here is a pdf file that you can copy and print out on 8-1/2 x 11 size paper. Note that I included a scale on the lower right corner so that you can print one copy and confirm that it is to scale. If it is then print multi copies as needed.

I like those targets, its crazy how when you don't hit dead center how far off it looks through the scope, but when you walk up and look it's only maybe 1 - 1.5 mm off.
Can't wait till warm weather and fly and wasp season begins...!!!!

Hello @Richmeister ,

That is why I stated that the Bullseye is only 1/8" diameter. Even printed out as a photo a "miss" is almost not a miss  :p :ROFLMAO:

I Shot Challenger 2021 at my 25yd, setup today...started with the JSB RS Diabolo 7.33. did good, pellets touching, then tried some other brands and different weights.
Heavier weights shot about 1/2"to 3/4" lower, that is no biggy,. but they did not group well enough; my gauge went down some, I was thinking maybe I needed to fill it up some, uh,.but it has a regulator and I know it is not off the regulator, let me try the 7.33 again, sure enough, was pellet on pellet.
So the JSB 7.33gr. work great in it.
Yes, the JSB skirts are out of round, so what; the skirts are so soft the force of a little air behind them flairs them out, no problems then.
Sorry, no pictures, truth be told I am learning my new iPhone 14, and between shooting and taking advantage of No rain, I also did some neglected yard work.
Tip about small targets,I use 1/8 to 1/4" different color stickies, work great because you can stick them anywhere on anything;)

Hello @boscoebrea

So your Challenger is like mine and seems to like the JSB 7.33 Domed pellets. I have not shot them at 25-yards yet but if the wind will allow, I will real soon.

Hello everyone,

I was able to shoot four cards this morning at 25-yards and used 7 of the 8 new pellets that I had ordered. The winner of the most accurate was the Air Arms Falcon 4.52mm 7.33gr Domed pellet. I did not shoot the H&N Baracuda Green because it shot so poorly at 10-meters. The only other one that came close was ( to my surprise ) the Crosman Hunting Pointed 7.4gr. After shooting the test targets I put up a 25 Yard MOA and shot it using the Air Arms Falcon and have attached a photo. Most pleased with this rifle designed to shoot 10-meters and the results of a score of 246 at 25-yards and had only one flier out of the 25 shots.
