Culling Chickens in Hawaii

@Garry1955 Welcome to AGN Garry. I wish I knew the answer. There are enough members here on the islands that someone might have some info for you. Give them a little time. The only member that comes to mind that I’ve seen shooting pest chickens on AGN is @Peskadot671, but I believe that he resides elsewhere. Which type of airgun(s) are you shooting (springers, PCPs, arrow guns)? What’s your airgun of choice for chickens? Hogs?

I used to live there. Almost everything regarding flying projectiles in Hawaii is either outright illegal, or highly regulated. There is good hunting, but everything has to be permitted. I believe the chickens are regarded like cows in India. I would not advise shooting at them. I remember a story of someone getting arrested for shooting them with a pellet gun.

Then there's the whole thing of getting the airgun on the plane if you go that route. IF it's a PCP, compressed gas cylinders are HAZMAT. It will have to be declared and packed accordingly.

<--- If it were me, I would call the Honolulu police department and be 100% sure. Not 99%, but 100%. They'll lock a mainlander up in a second over an infraction regarding flying lead and one of their state birds. Tread carefully.

Hi Folk,

I’m new to this forum, first of all my names Garry I’m from MT.

Visiting my daughter next month in Hawaii, Curious if I can shoot those chickens over there legally? Been researching pests on the Island (Oahu I believe) and those chickens and hogs have caught my eye.

Thanks folk

Hi Garry,

The state recommend you dispatch chickens “humanely via cages”, however I don’t see a faster way to put them out then a good placed shot taking them out pain free.

And only on your private property as AirArcher66 said above.

looks like its illegal, but chickens, particularly roosters, are tougher to take out with a pellet gun than you might imagine .. ive culled several of my own roosters, and even an mrod 25 is far from positive, typically takes 5+ hits, not too humane .. theyre tough .. need a big bore to take them out positive like ...

Not true,

It's all about shot placement, I can go and show you a ton of pictures of many roosters I took with my .22 Rainstorm,......best shot is the lower neck and they go down on the spot.

Dropped this guy yesterday with a H&N hornet

Got good placement around his neck as Airarcher66 mentioned that’s the sweet spot

Hi Airarcher66 & FinnT ,

Me and my 8 year old boy have just purchased our first .22 caliber air guns from Walmart today for fun target shooting,

Hi Airarcher66 & FinnT ,

We were both together scrolling threw this forum and see your disgusting disturbing images of those poor illegally killed chickens, I’ll be calling Honolulu Police as you both are from Oahu as discussed in another forum together, and reporting you for animal cruelty you animals. How dare you kill those innocent chickens!

Hi Mick,

I appreciate your concern for inhumanity,

however the gentlemen you’ve accused of inhumanity Airarcher66 and FinnT do hunt humanely and by the looks of it put there prey out in 1 shot.
so stop with your bullpoop accusing good folk of such slanderous accusations, My daughter that lives on Oahu is a indeed in HPD so feel free to call and ask for Officer Hailey Peterson and address this.

Feral Chickens seem like a serious and legitimate cause for concern in Hawaii. The following link contains a copy of a feral chicken eradication program discussed in the state senate on Oahu. Feral Chicken Eradication Program This for 2022 I also read legislation for the 2021-2022 fiscal year.

I don’t live in Hawaii, but it appears that some of these animals are far from “innocent” not only being nuisance animals, but posing a health risk to the public. Shooting on private property is another issue.

A little review of hunting regulations here so people understands better,

it is illegal to hunt anything with airguns on state lands,

it is legal to hunt mammals with airguns on private lands

it is illegal to hunt game birds with airguns even on private lands

it is illegal to hunt jungle fowl ( feral chickens) on state land regardless of method used

Jungle fowl ( feral chickens ) do not fall under game birds and are permitted to be hunted on your property with ANY method

Hope this will put some minds at ease.
