Custom cutting pelican foam- seeking tips

I don't own an electric carving knife but I do have a jigsaw----- anyone ever use one of those? Or a reciprocating saw? I got a pelican case on a 4th of july sale to match the new wildcat compact, its a perfect fit. I'd like to get this right the first time instead of trial and error

Also, should I cut it so the rifle is carried right-side-up? that seems a better idea

I like laying my guns in the case like you've got pictured. For me it's more difficult to get them in or out when the scope is facing towards me. Only other thing as far as placement is if you're using a case with wheels have the muzzle end opposite side of the wheels for better stability when the case is vertical. I think the way you've got it pictured is perfect. A jigsaw can work just make sure your markings are good.

If there are two layers of foam and you are cutting the top layer. You can draw your marks on the backside of the foam to be cut to avoid the drawn lines from showing when face up. Reading that back it sounds confusing but I managed to do it when I cut mine out and I’m a klutz. So it can’t be that difficult. 


I did use a cheap electric knife from Amazon but it worked well. It looks good and is functional.

An electric knife is the best tool, followed by a good sharp knife. I fear that a saw would make jagged edges and lots of "sawdust".

Where can I buy this black foam? What would I need to search for in the Bay or the Amazon?

thanks for everyone's input everyone. I'll try out a jigsaw or oscillating saw with a metal cutting bit [for the smaller teeth] and try it on some other high density foam I have to see how well it works.

If you want a professional look and not a hack job on your gun foam, another option is to purchase or build your own Hot Wire Foam Cutter. All you need is the nichrome wire and some dimmer switches you can find on Amazon. I still haven't got around to building mine yet but eventually. Here's an example...

I bought a 20 dollar electric knife off amazon. The manufacturer says its good for foam and it'll be here in a day- damn amazon. I also bought the plastiseal thanks for the recommendation.
