Daisy Daisy 499b

I am thinking about the spring . I am sure the original spring will last me for years. And I am only looking for consistency. So upping the power is not something I gave much thought to. Then I began to think about how this gun is made. There are two sides the spring side and the air tube side. Between them is an aluminum piece with a magnet and a hole. That aluminum piece is held in place with four dents. l think a more powerful spring might dislodge that piece. Even if it distorts it the gun is ruined.

SO ? has anyone thought to change to a LW barrel ? (joking ) why is it a lot of people think low power is not useful ? I shoot a Morini pistol which is designed for 10 meters period ! Have i shot it farther ? yes i shoot it mostly @ 50 feet targets instead of 33 feet / 10 meters . really no different POA.

I don’t know . But I am very interested in seeing how different speeds affect BBs I have a 760 pump that could be used for that. I think 230 fps is what the engineers suggest. I want consistent speed and accuracy plus not shooting through my low power trap at 15 feet. Any further distance and I am going to shoot pellets.

My first official 15 foot 3 shots 11 targets. All in one sitting.

I need to learn the gun now. It can shoot.

Those are good groups!

I like the ritual that you have to observe when using that rifle. Do the things, make the shot. Do the things, (again,) make the shot. There's a special form of virtuosity* to be found in that.

Cheers,

J~

I'm almost certain that the low powered springs used in the 499b have nothing to do with accuracy, but were instead intended to make the guns easier to operate for children. I've read a number of threads on modifying Daisy's and not one has ever mentioned accuracy being negatively impacted by using a heavier spring. I know from experience though that a lot of younger shooters find Red Ryders and 105's to be difficult to cock.

This is day two of my 10 day challenge.
I noticed my right shoulder getting sore and tired yesterday. But I have had two rotator cuff surgery’s so I’m not surprised. Then today it started and I realized for no reason at all I am signaling a right turn. Holding my arm up. I relaxed my arm and let it hang and it feels better.

Tonight 33 shots and I did a 278 and that’s with one target totally blown. I can’t really see the bullseye when I’m shooting. So I can’t tell how I’m doing unless the white dot goes away.
Tonight was better than last night by three points. Going for a 290. Tomorrow I want to get a 280.

So last night was not good . No warm up and kinda rushed. BUT I also cleaned out the BB trap and they were all “used” BBs. They look OK but went into that duct seal. I’m gonna clean and lube the BBs tonight. Just to see what happens. I did sorta wipe them off with alcohol but did not clean and lube like I do with pellets.

Make a new trap and lose the duct seal. Use a folded up bath towel. The BBs will just fall to the bottom of the trap. I made this wood one with a dowel rod at the top to hang a bath towel. Then I just clip the paper 5M bb target to the front (no cardboard backing). You could use a cardboard box or plastic tub if you don’t want to make a box.

Tonight was my lowest score yet. 264 I will say the pellets did not drop into the barrel a couple times and before I started the right vertical column I removed the barrel and check it and wiped out the tip. The barrel was screwed in tight. And I screwed it in hand tight. It seemed to shoot better on those last four targets.

Depending on how you want to use your 499B, you can also put a red-dot sight on it.

I shoot mine at two tin-can racks that sit in the pines beyond the yard. The area is always changing light and shadows. In the shadows the peep doesn't work well but the red-dot works excellent! For shooting paper in good lighting the peep is more accurate, but not by much.

What mount or what red dot are you using that has worked for you? The astigmatism in my eyes can make using irons / peeps difficult to use at times and this is very appealing.

I had to clean the barrel again. I need to do a better job of washing the used BBs.

BIG WARNING!!!
Never clean a 488 barrel while it is in the gun!
If you run a cleaning rod down the barrel and touch the magnet it can easily pop the magnet through the abutment washer and ruin the gun.

Any how 271 I really don’t feel bad as the last three targets lower right were affected by the barrel .
Also don’t over tighten the barrel and I am going to mark my barrel so I get it back where it was sighted in.

It sounds like you need a cleaning rod with a stop built into it.
