That is a real walnut stock. When you are browsing the thrift store and flea markets there are enough of there out there that you might find a red Ryder with a walnut stock. It is very cool.

I got the butt hook and it is really nice. The ends have notches for adjustment and very nice Allen screws.
I had to first make a metal plate and fit it to the stock. I sanded the back of the stock flat. Actually has a recess in the center with a 1/4 inch band around the edge . Then I fitted the butt hook to the metal plate. Once all that was done I screwed the three pieces together and finished sanding and fitting till I got tired. I will spend tomorrow fitting it better. . It is really perfect.

I like it. Maybe experiment with your water base stain and oil finish inside the forearm trough and see how it looks.

I think it will look good. I did some test pieces but on a different wood type. As long as it’s consistent it will be fine. Going with oil stain and danish oil finish.
I am probably going to fill the forearm trough with BBs and epoxy for added weight.

You are a 499 man,I love how this post has gone. I set mine up better,you have inspired me.I been thinking about making that 499 fit me better.I will get with the program.
I have put stronger springs and large air tubes in some of my BBrifle.
I bought a special tool ,a long fork-like tool to compress the spring...
I want to buy another used 499, the thing is even used; they are not cheap even used.
I heard about the stronger spring kits for the Daisy BBrifle. A lot of the time, you can not use the "kit" because it may not fit your BB rifle,so just get the spring and seals...
The air tube is the barrel. Sometimes, you can get a better air tube,
and it will be more accurate.
Truth is at a longer distance, you can train yourself to become a better shooter by judging the route where the BB will land; Some call this instinctive shooting, while others call it luck, It Reminds me of pool shooting,called English

I have scoped BB guns and shot groups with them off a bench. With the magnification turned up, you can see the BB in flight and at about 15-20 yards the majority are starting to veer off and there's no way to predict which way they will go. Some go left, some go right, some go up and some go down. You might compensate and be right sometimes and it may even be that a particular gun tends to throw shots primarily in one direction, but if you shoot paper at that range you'll see that it's mostly random. Full auto fire provides a brute force way to compensate for this inaccuracy and its a hell of a lot of fun so I'm a big fan of it in BB guns.You are a 499 man,I love how this post has gone. The 499 is made for five meter shooting and I am at 5.5 meter. It is about as accurate as a good spring gun at 30 yards. Same sort of groups anyhow. Three of four in a tight cluster and one or two a little off. But now I can practice all the field target shooting positions all winter. Standing kneeling prone and with sticks and bucket for hunter.
I got the stain on the stock . I am waiting for it to dry before starting the Danish oil finish.
The sight is out for delivery. I pulled the gun apart in the mean time. Inspected the spring and seals. The inside of the action looks great.
I added two shims on either side of the trigger to reduce side to side movement.
Next I’m going to fill the fore stock with epoxy and BBs to weight it . Not sure how much.

you could use pellet scraps from your pellet trap , if you need more weight in that small trough ?

I have lead tire weights . I just thought BBs would be cool. I am now realizing j can’t just fill the trough up. I need to figure out the balance point and compensate for the butt hook.
And metal Diopter sight. It is big but line up great. I did have to make a special screw and recess the head a bit to get it to fit Perfect.
It sighted in without a stock fine. So I think will all work.

I filled the back cavity with BBs and it feels about right. So I bedded them in with epoxy. The front cavity has a pin going through I can add lead if I need it.

Ok this is nuts. I fitted everything together. Two coats of oil and let it sit for 24 hours. Then put it together and sighted it in with a couple five shot groups. And it feels really goods. With the added weight it is really a heavy solid feeling gun. And the butt hook is very comfortable. .
So I sat down with my bucket and sticks set up I use for hunter field target and it put three pellets into one hole and I purposely aimed right to see if I was actually hitting the target. Who stacks BBs?
So I shifted to another clean target and put four shots in one hole . I could not believe it so on the fifth shot I aimed extra carful and of corse the BB missed the group. Instead it went through the Bullseye where I was aiming.

I guess the next step is to start putting it on the Chronograph and measuring the speed and testing different BBs . I read there are a number of spring’s available. And that the stock spring is prone to sagging. So I want to get a measurement while it’s new and shooting well.
I gotta keep remind in by myself it’s just a BB gun. But it is -5 degrees outside and I’m shooting .

This whole thread has me realizing that my 499 (currently sitting in the corner staring at me as I type this) needs to be pulled back out and shot. Maybe even go down the rabbit hole you created and start modding mine lol.

It is so much fun trying to get that perfect group. And every week I sweep a magnet over the trap and recover the BBs.

I have one of those rear sights sitting around. Did it fit the base that is tack tack welded on the rifle? I really don’t have an issue with the factory rear sight.
