Daystate Huntsman Regal XL or Air Arms S510?

I think i'm going to get a PCP and these are the only two that are in contention. I'll be getting the Altaros booster to go with my home air compressor, so I don't have to drive half way across the state to get air. I would appreciate any pros or cons on either one of these rifles. I want an accurate rifle and dependable. I'll be getting it in .22 caliber and use it for target and small game hunting. I will not be shooting in any match competition.

I have had the AAs510 for 3 years now and it was my first PCP, since then i've purchase other more expensive ones but I still come back and shoot it from time to time. It is my most adjustable PCP at the moment because of the power knob and my only full size rifle. I love it and most likely alway keep it. Never had the Daystate Regal but great looking gun. If the Regal has a power well or adjustment knob don't think you will go wrong with either. If it doesn't i would of with the s510 (maybe the Carbine version it is a long gun).

I have the Daystate Regal XL (10 months) and the AAs410 (4 years). No complaints withe AA in terms of quality and performance. Killed 2 of the first 3 fox squirrels I shot at with it. I like my Regal XL better because I'm purely a hunter and the Regal is shorter, lighter, an more streamlined. Oh, and the wood on the Daystate is much more figured.

Mr Johns, I have an AA S-510 FAC. I've had it for many years and it has always been a very steady rifle in my collection. Mags are cheap and pretty easy to load. If I were still shooting it regularly, I would look into adding an aftermarket regulator.
The Regal is also an excellent choice but, I have not owned one so I cannot say anything about it. The Daystate name is one of the best in the business and they have excellent products.
For the price range, I'd be remiss to not mention the Streamline. Lotta bang for the buck there.
I think you'll be very happy with either one of the rifles you have picked out. Between the two, I might lean towards the Regal for the looks and the name brand. The downside might be the price of mags.
One of the differences to consider might be the cocking mechanism. 510 is off to the side and Regal is straight back at your face. I highly doubt you'd hit yourself in the face but, it might make a difference to you as a shooter.
Good luck with this great choice you have to make!
Tom

Mr Johns,

Not many responses from Regal owners, so I'll chip in. First, using the search tools of this forum you can find a huge amount of (nearly 100% positive) information about the Regal that's been posted since the forum started. Also 'Sir' Ted of hold over fame has an excellent video review of the gun on youtube.

I've had a Regal for about 3 years now and love it. About the gun: its by far the most affordable entry into Daystate's line. There are less expensive options, such as the AA S-510 FAC that probably shoot as well. So why buy a Daystate? As I and many others have posted earlier, its mostly about quality and the pleasure of owning a gun of this class. The gun will last a lifetime; the walnut stock is stunning, beautiful checkering, curves in all the right places; the 10-shot magazine is a joy to load and use, there is nothing comparable from other manufacturers (not surprising if you ever have the unfortunate desire to purchase another magazine, its another $100); bottom line, this is a beautiful gun with a long history of satisfied owners. Accuracy is lethal for small game (you will be surprised what you can take down with well placed shots). Add a Huggett moderator and the gun is nearly silent. The 30 ft lb option is probably best for .22, and will give a highly reproducible 30 shot string, even though the gun is not regulated; this is due to the Harper sling shot, which does an excellent job. The gun was sold (and designed) as a hunting rifle, where its more than accurate enough for doing its job, over and over again. For target shooting, there may be better choices? Although a 40 ft lb version is available in .22, your accuracy will likely decrease. A .25 is also available, but these are unusual, and not much information has been posted.

I have both of these rifles. Dittos with what everybody else said. I like the length of the regal better, but I like the side lever better on the s510. The bolt will move up on you sometimes when hunting because the detent isn't real tight and you won't notice it and will lose some velocity and get a puff of air in the face, so you need to be cognizant of that when hunting. In my opinion both are quiet enough. This past spring I bought an FX 400 and haven't shot either of those guns since. Shot count is double the others, perfect length, weight and smooth side lever action. Only a couple hundred more than an s510. Choose wisely.

The one thing that has stopped me from buying both of these rifles is neither are regulated. Both are beautiful rifles but why pay over a grand to have a rifle that is not regulated. You can add an after market regulator but may not be a simple add on and may require you to send it out increasing the price. The British manufactures appear to ignore the American market as far as non-regulated, underpowered in the larger calibers, and smaller air tubes ( like AA). Most of DayStates other rifles are regulated not sure why they haven't done the Regal. I personally would like to own both but the added cost to get it they way I want points me to other rifles.

mrjohns,
Tough decision you have here, I have also had both and currently have the Regal along with the FX400 for 22's. Just like the others said, the side leaver on the AA's is smoother and makes it a little easier to cock the gun. I've owned a AA S500 Xtra and later a S510 Carbine that I regulated. Shooting 30fpe the AA's to my ears are louder than the Regal but it does have a LDC included on it. A nice LDC on the AA's really quites them down but it makes the "Xtra" version really long. The Regal is pretty short, more of a carbine size. The AA S510 Carbine is about the same length especially after you add a LDC. Between the AA Carbine and the Regal, shot count definitely goes to the Regal. The Regal's Harper valve and Slingshot Hammer gives the gun a great string of around 35 shots. Seems like the AA Carbine was closer to 25 for the same ES.

Build quality is about the same, the AA's actually feel more solidly built. To me the difference the difference comes when you pick up the Regal and handle it. It's light, shoulders well and the beauty of it in most cases, is first class. Accuracy is super, do your part and 1/2" groups at 50yds are pretty common. You can't go wrong with either gun but its the Regal that's still in my gun cabinet. It's still getting plenty of trigger time even though I just bought a FX400 which is a little more accurate than the Regal.
Good Luck
Jimmy

I have S510 .22 walnut hole stock, carbine. I have had it about 3-4 years. Never let me down. Power wheel is great to have when plinking in the back yard. My air arms carbine is great and easy to handle. Did I mention accurate. I also have FX500, Hw 97, .25 cal FX impact coming next week. I keeping my guns down three, HW 97.20 stays,
Impact will stay, and AA 510 will stay. FX 500 will go up for sale in the near future.(don't get me wrong FX 500 is awesome) Just little to big to do drive by's on Ground squirrels (out of my truck) ..

I have a Daystate Hunter XL and love it but In reality both guns are great! A good friend of mine has the S510 and it is also a good gun. I went with the Daystate because of its well known quality ad it's just a lil better looking (at least IMO). My Hunter XL is very accurate and gives me at least 90 accurate shots before having to refill. Because of its length it is more of a carbine with the accuracy of a long rifle.

Putting a regulator on these Daystates makes almost no difference. A good friend of mine (AZ) put one on his Regal and it made no noticeable difference, he did some testing on it with his chronograph & eventually took the regulator off just because he would get less shots with the regulator in.

value for money+reliability, access to spares Worldwide NO two ways about the WEIHRAUCH HW100 - 14 pellets clip regulated fantastic precision dime size groups at 50 meters. proven design etc etc etc. did I miss anything? think not
ps; I´ve had two aa 410 xtra fac great guns, but not being regulated , at full power, 30 good shots
daystates never had any but that thing of changing models ever so often, somehow makes me think of what the owners of the new fx impacts are going trough right now. little glitches, annoying when you consider the price you pay for these guns, and as far as I can see perhaps will take eighteen to 24 months for the guys back in Sweden to put things right, then it will be the time to consi9der buy an impact
