Daystate Hutsman HARD COCKING PROBLEM

Hi all

I'm the new to me owner of an immaculate Daystate Huntsman Regal XL . FAC 22 caliber.

It was bought from a trustworthy forum member.

The rifle is not regulated; and according to the previous owner is in an OEM state of tune

The one chrono string so far is evidence of that, as is shot count

THE PROBLEM

The rifle is hard to cock, requiring a strong pull.

Every once in awhile it gets harder to cock

So much so that a second pull is required to get it to lock in

SOLUTION?

Where should I begin in approaching the problem?

Any and all experienced advice & suggestions appreciated

Thanks

Ed

I had a Regal, great rifle, but yes they are a bit hard to cook. But it should be consistent. Is the velocity consistent, assuming you are in the sweet spot of the fill? If not, I might suspect a hammer and spring assembly that is in need of cleaning and lube. Otherwise, seems it almost has to be the bolt assembly that needs maintenence. But I'm no Daystate expert, and I never had mine apart, so hopefully someone with hands-on experience will advise.

Morning Ed. Do you feel comfortable pulling the breach? The bolt and where it rides in the breach probably needs to be cleaned and re lubed. Just as a test, cock the bolt and put a little moly or the like on the bolt with a q tip and work it back and forth. If it improves, you've found the problem. Then I would suggest taking it apart and doing it right.

If I remember correctly, the 2 front breach screws are metric and the rear is standard.

J King had a nice tear down tutorial on here at one point. Maybe he will catch this. It's an easy gun to work on.

Most traditional “bolt action” type PCPs bind some. This is why the sidelever style is more pleasant due to a mechanical/leverage advantage.

Borrowing that your gun isn’t dry and has a bit of lube, I’ve found that with my .22 Daystate Regal, it helps to distribute the pull-back load with my thumb in the area pointed to in the picture.

Thanks zx10woall

However this goes beyond thumb position. At its most difficult an underhand pull is needed.

Thanks for the heads up, Velocity is consistent, good shot curve. I'll try Rj's advice below

Yes Rj, I feel very comfortable pulling the breech

Will try the moly,or the cleaner titanium dioxide, lube on the bolt first.

FWIW I watched a top end tear down video by a guy that tunes his Regals by making different ( for lack of a better word) spring spacers

The R&R task seems very straight forward

This will not happen today, but when it does I'll update.

Thanks for the advice

i bought the same fac regal for my wife to shoot. she could not cock it. installed a 12 ft/lb UK hammer spring in it--not much better. bought this oversized bolt handle/knob from a guy in the UK. much much better now. happy wife==happy life. cocks way better-even with the fac spring installed.

see his listing on ebay.com/UK ----"Cocking Bolt Handle Compatible fit for Daystate Airwolf and Similar Actions"

YES .... Closer to the bolts center line easier it will cock . Big cocking handles do nothing but aggravate the side load and binding.

While NOT pretty, the original handle design and what BAM copied with the B50's is the better design that keeps the pull straight back.

I agree Motorhead

It's kind of like jamming the tranny into 2nd gear when the clutch won't fully disengage

If you're allergic to spinach then ITS HUMA-TIME then put a lighter hammer spring much easier to cock. I am taking a WILD guess yours isn't regulated. Yo!

Love spinach!

See my request above for an additive.

Do not want to regulate the rifle

My 25 cocks a lot more easily BTW

If it were consistent (as opposed to very hard/less hard) I too would blame the hammer spring

That's exactly what it feels like

Before tickling the bolt with a little moly lube today (made no difference) I took a magnifying glass to it.

On the right side there are faint marks like small parenthesis on the steel ))))))))))).

Some part may be out of alignment or worn; or maybe the hammer spring is binding

Disassembly is the next step, I think

I'm on my second Regal. Have had some success in polishing the moving parts the best I could. The diameter of that pencil thin bolt doesn't help. A larger bolt like a Marauder has would give more surface area and in this instance I think would help but it is what it is. I knew the issue going in on my second Daystate but I appreciate the little carbine so much it's worth it. As mentioned above it does help to keep your fingers and thumb as close to the center of the cocking bolt. Another thing that helps is to cock it against your shouder for a back up support.

Scott, have you had any luck smoothing these out? I haven't given up yet and plan on working on mine a little more to see if there is a little more to gain.

I would FIRST change that hammer spring with an OEM replacement or swap out from your 25 see if that makes any difference first. Then you know what you need to do. Like NIKE... JUST DO IT... Yo!

I met a guy at an FT shoot who had had a welder modify his bolt handle by attaching a ring directly in line with the bolt. This allowed him to pull straight back when cycling the bolt. It may have been silver-soldered on since the bolt handle is not steel, at least on the Huntsman I have. They are indeed hard to cock, I've watched my Brother in law double load his a time or two and I've done it myself.

Scott-are the old style handles available anymore?

I have a 177 Huntsman and it is a very accurate rifle. And hard to cock, that is the only downfall. Here is what I do to make it easier. if shooting from a bench put your right shoulder into the butt while cocking with right hand. Shooting offhand place butt in the nook of your right elbow and cock with right hand. Shooting from a bucket at FT shoot place butt against hip or my solid abs. Each method requires a steady gentle pull. I have seen people start trying to jerk or unevenly tug at the bolt which makes cocking harder. I sure wish they had a lever like my 15 foot long Wolverine

Works for this old fart
