Daystate Renegade or Edgun Matador

Ok guys I am a left handed shooter looking for a new .25 cal rifle in a shorter design. I already own a Crown.

I know the Edgun is left or right handed and the Renegade can have the cocking lever switched. The Edgun is shorter, the Daystate has the electronic trigger and 5 year warranty.

Hopefully you guys can give me some good information to help me decide. I would be open to other rifles, but in the bullpup design it needs to have a left hand cocking lever.

Thx Mike

Don't have either but if I was making that choice I think I would go for the Edgun. From what I hear they are built like a tank and very easy to work on. Now, if the Renegade really calls you, I would bet that they will release a regulated version in the near future. At least that is the direction they are headed. Most their models are being released with Humas, so it is only a matter of time before they release the Renegade HR, unless you don't have the time to wait.

Good luck

The .25 HP Renegade has been on my wish list for some time now. I actually ordered a .25 Matodor R3 but canceled aftrer shooting one first hand. I liked the look and feel but I hated the rear bolt (even though Ed is a Lefty). Since all the new changes with the Matador, it now has taken the lead. I am left handed.

The Matador has kept their platform simple, accurate, and powerful. With the cocking lever moved forward it looks to be a valid choice for a lefty. I also like how the barrel can be cleaned from the rear. It also appears that these rifles are leading the way in long range shooting.

I have two renegades 22 standard and 25 HP. Great guns but heavy and rear cocking. Not that it's a big deal but after owning side levers in the middle I prefer that setup. I was thinking about an Edgun R5M, i currently own a Leshiy and love it. For weight and how Ed makes his products I would go with the Edgun myself. Couple things I do like about Renegades is the trigger, foster fill, dont need to look down the barrel to see pressure, built in level, anti double load, rail on bottom built into the stock. Like I said the daystate are great guns as well.

I have a Leshiy, Veles, and now R5M from Ed... these things are built to last and are dead nuts out of the box... and at this price range, that shouldn't be a nice to have... it should be a requirement. You don't see any posts about them breaking or any issues for that matter. People who do have issues don't post about about it b/c they they did some mod to it (me included)... ie it's on them.

Open the box, adjust hammer (reg on the Leshiy if you're changing cal) and shoot... for a really long time. That is something that gave me peace of mind, and I think is important when spending $2K on an airgun!

The R5M is out of the box ready... you can just adjust the hammer to your liking, but really no need to even touch the reg... and the thing shoots lasers. I've shot single hole groups at 30 yards (i.e. backyard pesting) at 525 - 900 FPS w/o touching the reg. I shoot rats between the eyes time after time (mostly on film too ;) with all 3 EdGun's I own at 8-30 yards. It's almost boring to be honest how accurate it is. The Leshiy requires some practice with the hold, but the R5M requirements are the ability to pull the trigger. For giggles I've been trying to shoot offhand sometimes on rats to practice my breathing.

The attention to detail is extraordinary in everything Ed makes... and the R5M platform is no different. I've seen a few recent posts about the R5 on here that kind of make me laugh... like FX is paying more folks than just the usual suspects ;)... I tease I tease! Anyway, the double sided cocking lever has something like 6 ball bearings in it. Can you breath on it and have it cock?... no, but it's smooth AF with a little pressure greater than a 8 year old can do, and I guarantee you... this one won't break!

The trigger is fully adjustable, but I've left it as is for now. I use this thing to kill sh!t in my backyard, not punch paper... so those crazy light triggers are not my jam. You can adjust it though... so dial it in to your liking.

I can't speak for the other gun... but I can assure you, a) The R5M is worth every penny, and b) you will experience ZERO buyers remorse.

Not to throw a wrench into your plans... but I'm hearing the Leyla 2.0 is spectacular as well. I was going back and forth between that and the R5M Standard, but I prefer to shoot off a bipod, and let that be the deciding factor. If you shoot offhand, or off a bag (or any rest)... it's something you should look at too. The laminate stocks Brian has in are sexy as hell IMO, but it's 2 bolts if you ever want to change (on the R5 as well).

Anyways, just wanted to give you some comfort if you go the Edgun route... it's expensive I get it, but you get what you pay for, and you'll have this one throwing lead for a very long time.

Happy shooting!

PS

Here's some video highlights of the R5M... from unboxing to throwing 34gr'ers at squirrels ;)

I have two Matador R5’s. First one was the single shot .30 which I liked so much, I bought an R5M in .25.

Pros in favor of the R5M: lighter, shorter, with an equal or greater shot count. The laminate stocks make this gun much better looking compared to the Renegade. Super easy to take apart and service in the comfort of your home with only a few tools. Backed by Brian over at Edgunwest who can walk you through pretty much anything. Super easy to tune as well. Cocking arm is forward and ambidextrous. Included moderator is pretty much all you need for quiet shooting. Extra orings included along with the male foster adapter for the fill probe. Lots of videos online from Ed at EDgun pretty much showing you how to fieldstrip this gun down in a matter of minutes.

Cons for the R5M: Trigger is likely heavier than Renegade although adjustable, designed as a hunting trigger. No included Picatinny rail. I added a Magpul rail on both of mine for under $10 each and a half hour of labor max.

I echo what Tim said above. I also have lots of posts with my R5’s on the forum both with hunting and accuracy videos. Just click on my username and browse.

I will never sell my R5’s.

Good luck with your decision.
