diablos vs hollow points for rats

I have been using predator hollow points for years to eliminate rats using an old .177 discovery. I recently picked up a couple of tins of rifle premium series 8.33 grn .177 Diablo style pellets. Color me impressed! I am still getting 930fps and they are accurate out of my disco out to 20 yards, I am getting about a .45" group at 20 yards. Not world-class but devastating on rats. The profile on these is much closer to a flat point than other "round nose" pellets I have used and they wack the critters with authority, generally not exiting on the far side with body shots. I need to get a few pictures but at a lower cost, and better accuracy, I think I have found my new favorite pest removal pellet. What are your experiences with round nose vs hollowpoint on pests?

Diabolo refers to the pinched wasp waist of the pellet. My experiences with hollow points are mixed, few work, fewer are accurate. If your gun will shoot flat nose wad utters they do something neat to flesh and paper. Pointed I only use if the gun shoots them well and round nose just seem to always work. Send them at 850-900 fps and pests will fall no matter what you use. I shoot jsb hades in 22 and 25.

i have shot these out of my 'barn gun' at 600fps. i have had the same results as you with no pass-thru's.
have you ever tried H&N match green 5.25gr lead free wadcutters ?
there kinda pricey but no roof metal damage or lead deposits in the cattle feed (y)
And wadcutter flat nose Whacks !

I have not tried them but I will give them a try next time I order pellets. Not damaging the scenery is always a priority. I made what is basically a combination bird feeder, and bullet trap to control where the pellets go. It is a wood box with a seed tube, like a bird feeder, and the back is lined with old bricks. Works like a champ, I keep adding seed and they just keep coming.

x2 for wadcutters on small pests. Having shot a few hundred gray squirrels on scope cam, it became clear wadcutters were more effective than domes if the shot placement was less than optimal.

A good hollow point can be equally devastating if not better, but most hollow point pellets I’ve recovered do not actually expand, and seem to have a similar effect on game and pests as a dome. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing since a well-placed dome is very effective, but in situations where shots may exceed 40 yards or so, I’d rather have a good dome at the ready as opposed to a hollow point or wadcutter.

H&N Terminators are evil on pests. One of my favorite pellets and fairly inexpensive.

Check out this awesome app. It has helped me ID my quarry so only pest birds are harvested. Check your state hunting laws first!

Here in Michigan, morning doves are considered song birds (go figure, I shot thousands of these in The Great State of Kansas). So they get a pass in the feeder zone. I have not seen a starling, grackle or hosp in a couple of seasons now so only song birds.

Fwiw I used to shoot crow magnums in my slower pump gun with fantastic results, nothing I have in high power likes them. Predator polymag shorts work decent in 2 of my guns and the hades work in anything that likes a round nosed jsb counterpart. Hades aren't hollow point per se but they do change shape. My main hunting gun uses hades, the varmint airgun shoots hp slugs.

Wadcutters are tried and true.

Just being a little picky, but it's DIABOLO, not DIABLO. As in Chinese yoyo, not devil. Cheers.

Rifle premium series 8.33 grn do have a distinctive sound when hitting paper never did use them on a critter though just didn't find them accurate enough in my guns I think it was random fliers that put me off but I do remember the sound.

JTS 21.53 semi-domes are my new favorite hunting pellet I get excellent accuracy and they hit hard. Wish JTS had a .177 semi-dome .
