Nine shooters turned out for a day in the tropics with a 60 shot match. Temperatures started in the low 70s and ended in the high 80s, but with Amazonian levels of humidity. A few targets were hard to see due to shade by the tree canopy. But, there was almost no wind (a breeze would have been nice to cool us down a bit).
The average difficulty was 30.92 T; with 1 off hand and 1 kneeling lane; eight targets in the expert range of 40-48T; 10 targets > 40 yards; and six targets of 0.5” – 0.375”; 10 lanes with three targets each shot twice, with 6 minutes per lane.
The match high score of 50/60 was taken by Tinh Nguyen, who sacrificed comfort after a few lanes to put on his shooting jacket, clearing 4 consecutive lanes with this new attire. Hector Medina took the top WFTF piston score and Tom Strong led the Hunter Division.
When the course was setup the target storage hutch was in disarray, have narrowly survived being flattened by a heavy limb from a dead oak tree. This made picking the correct targets a bit of a challenge, and ended up with replacement of a 0.875” target at 16 yards on the off hand lane, with a 0.5” target, resulting in an illegal 56T difficulty. Rex Gori, shooting Open Piston, knocked this down twice, with Hector Medina and Mark Mayer both taking it down one time. Clearly, in the right hands, Piston Rifles can compete with PCPs.
The top contestant for the best looking rifle was again Tinh Nguyen who turned out with a custom ZM 2002.
As always many thanks to those who travel long distances to compete and keep our sport alive

The next match at DIFTA is on Saturday August 19.
