Domed pellets

I tried a quick search and could not find this question:

Why are domed pellets so rare these days? When I was a kid you had a choice of wad cutters or domed, and that was it. Now, there are hollowpoints, pointed, superpointed, etc. Just for target shooting, I read that domed are better for beyond 10 meters, yet there are so few to choose from.

What gives?

As a general rule, the JSB's are some of the best domed pellets out there. Most people don't try many other domes after they have used the JSB's, they are great pellets. I will admit to also liking the H&N Field Target Trophy domed pellets too.

I think you may be mistaken with your search. Domed pellets are more common then any other pellet out! Outside of your local Walmart you can find a variety of quality domed pellets. Try “PyramydAir” for example, they have a plethora of domed pellets with buy 3 and the 4th is always free!

I agree - domed are widely available

Last week here in Britain/UK I came across a couple of tins of .177 air rifle pellets - Remington STRIKE (point) - that's what it says on the tin lid, and even a picture of pointed pellets - but the pellets inside the tin are domes

For many years now I've found no need for any pellets other than domed JSBs. Simply a matter of which JSB shoots best in any given gun; more often than not just a matter of matching pellet weight to power. For example, this .34" center-to-center five-shot group was shot at 50 yards with 8.4 grain JSB Exact domes at 760 FPS with an Allen Zasadny modified Steyr LP-1 PISTOL. But for the sake of full disclosure, the gun averaged .56" c-t-c groups at 50 yards.

Domed pellets are all that I use with the exception of the Crosman 14.3gr hollow point which is domed also but has the indentation formed into the tip.

Thanks Man. My next question was going to be about pellet weight for a regulated rifle, and your post answers that.

Hollow point pellets are mostly (in my opinion) marketing hype to the person that buys the "1200 FPS" Springer because it's more powerful, but can't hit the broad side of a barn. Walmart has good guns, but mostly cater to those with the desire for power over accuracy, and hollow points, or Piranha Pellets over domes. Just my opinion, but it's all marketing.

Walmart did sell Crosman Domes at one point, and I bought a boatload on close out for $6 per 500, but those are all gone now. Sad,

Just ordered some JSB Exact. I hope hope they work out. I am not getting any consistency from H&N. Otherwise, wadcutters may be my only choice for accuracy
