DonnyFL has anyone experienced clipping?

I'm waiting to take delivery of a .30 cal bolt action with 1/2 x20 aea adapter.

I already have a donny fl moderator rated .25/ .30 but the recommendation is to step up in caliber from the pellet size.

This seems excessive to go big bore on the moderator. Has anyone actually had clipping issues shooting .30 through a .25/ .30 rated can before?

FWIW the gun is a bolt action aea hp max

Thankyou!!

Bought a Donny Ronin for my .25. He suggested I go up one caliber so I got a .30. Never even use it on my .25 now (gun is very quiet without it) & only use it on my .30. NEVER any clipping. I got in the habit of putting an o-ring beneath the threads of all my 1/2×20 adapters. Keeps the can perfectly aligned and snugs it down without having metal on metal. 20230716_104134.jpg

Those are high end rifles which should make it less likely it is the "rifles' fault. So maybe the moderator is not centered on the bore of the airgun? If you make absolutely sure there is no projectile in the gun you could look down the barrel while shining a light in the chamber end and see if it looks like it is concentric.

I fairly recently tested multiple moderators that varied by the size of the bore through the moderator. I was surprised that making the bore size smaller did not in this case make the moderator quieter. One with a little bigger "hole" was both a little quieter and seems to be a little more accurate. My only "take away" is to suggest using the "next size up" may make more sense than I thought. If the smaller bore may not make the moderator work any better why take the risk of clipping?

@CarlJ,

Screw the moderator onto the shroud, as you did when it clipped; but with the shroud off the airgun. Then roll the shroud on a flat table and see if the moderator wobbles.

The degree to which you moderator is off to the barrel must be extreme, because that is the first baffle in the stack clipping (??). How is the barrel centered in the shroud? If there is a reflex air stripper, this is so bad, it is as if an O-ring is missing, allowing the shroud to droop.

What about the other end of the shroud? Try flipping the shroud end over end, assuming it has the same threads at both ends. The shroud end cuts may be angular at the front end of the shroud. This assumes you are screwing the moderator directly on the shroud? If not, what does the shroud to moderator adaptor look like?
