Tuning Dream-Tac Compact Tuning Advice Needed

I have the first edition .22 Dream-Tac Compact with the fat shroud, so adding a power plenum is not an option unless I covert it to the narrower shroud. I have a Best Fittings 300cc CF bottle on it and I like the way it looks, just with the short 320mm barrel, it does not produce a lot of power, or will it? I'm only getting about 850 fps out of 16 grain AA pellets, I'd like to get at least 900 fps, but would prefer 950.

Since it's not producing the power I'd like in .22, I sold the .25 barrel kit I had for it (never even used it) and went the other direction with a .177 barrel kit, thinking I'd see higher velocities. Well, I'm only seeing about 880 fps using 10.3 grain AA pellets. It seems I should be able to get more than that from a smaller .177 pellet.

My regulator is set at about 140 BAR, the hammer spring setting is at Max and the TP is set to .25/.30. Is it possible I have too much air and am over driving the valve? Should I try a lower reg setting? I have tried backing off the Hammer spring tension and setting the TP to .177/.22, but both caused a decrease in velocity.

Any recommended settings I should start off with to see if I can get 900+ fps from the 10 grain pellets?
 
177 is less efficient than .22 because the bore is smaller than the TP. You can go up to 150bars on the reg and get extra 10-20 FPS but that’s the best you can do. the .25 caliber 25.4 grain exact pellet gets up to 820fps. 

also because you are pushing the gun/barrel hard the gun might not be at it’s more accurate tune with the extra air create turbulence after the pellet exits. 


maybe you can try a heavier pellet/slug? That might help you to get a bit more power.

With the Compact, in any caliber, you’re not buying a powerhouse. FX never claimed it to be. If I was shooting a .177, I would focus on the 10.3-10.5’s. They are right where they need to be. If you want to shoot heavier, buy a .22. Here is what I did setting up my Compact. I set the HS wheel to max and found my max speed for my reg setting but it’s wasting air big time. Remember short barrel. Then I set it on #3 because that’s where the gun sounded nice and efficient. The gun shoots 15.89’s fabulous and 18.1’s pretty good. If I change the wheel to #4, it loves the 18.’s and the 15.89’s are now just ok. If you really like the compact, take what it gives you or buy a more powerful gun. It’s pellet speeds are on the lower side of the spectrum but anything squirrel size or smaller will never ever notice.

Yep, there is no substitute for barrel length. I don’t like big guns period. With my firearms, I shorten most of my barrels. Switch powders or even go to short mags trying to get velocity back. I finally quit and just make the gun extremely accurate and take what it gives me power wise. I brought that same mentality over to airguns. With a springer, I could chop a barrel way down and not lose anything and have cool carbines. It took a barrel project with my Priest to finally, like a slap in the face, make me realize something. We can turn a gun up with a short barrel to get it to produce what a gun with only a 3” longer barrel will do in its sleep. But we create an angry inefficient gun that may struggle with accuracy because of wasted air. Not worth it.
