Eating City Squirrels?

The internet is a weird place officially. Just eat the animals or don't but no one lives around Chernobyl. The amount of chemicals in water bottle and tap water is more of a threat. The food industry puts more poisons in there so called health food. This comment was weird to me because here in Tennessee in these hills we eat what we hunt or it goes to the dogs if it looks funny or smells or just to reward them.

The animals around Chernobyl are actually pretty clean. Don't eat the pigs (because they eat mushrooms which concentrate radioactive isotopes) and you'll be fine.

Generally speaking if you're asking on the internet you don't have access to local folk-knowledge about what contaminants are in the environment. That's why I suggested testing -- it doesn't hurt to know.

You can often find some really interesting information about your environment with tests like this. Perhaps your home is downstream from an old abandoned mine that everyone has forgotten about, etc.

Man I drink from water hose on hot day still. Bill gates ain't killed me yet. Still eat snow and rather not know every danger out there.

Not sure what you're getting at. I'm not talking about UFOs or conspiracy theories. I'm just saying that science does have some practical purposes. If you're not in a comfy position like you where you have folk knowledge of what is safe and what isn't, testing is an excellent equalizer.

No your right about it being useful. Just maybe I feel its odd application for small game. But do want to say I respect the resource matter you provided to the original question of this form. Please take no offense to my odd perspective and opinions on your statement. Im sure we'd kill a ton of squirrels together and all that.

I wouldn't. I lived in Chicago, Il for 42 years. We had rats as big as cats. The city would put rat poison packs in the alleys and nail little signs to all the wood electric poles warning of it (the poisen packs). We learned from an early age not to touch those little square packs. The rats ate it a little at a time and became immune to it. They call them "super rats". Squirrels are called "tree rats". A rat is a rat. No city squirrels for me.
I’m sorry

I would not eat any doves shot in any city either. A friend of mine and I used to go to a certain Oriental restaurant as the portions were large and it was inexpensive. Both of us were on very limited incomes. At one point, I noticed that every time we went there I would get sick. He didn't but I did. I told him I did not want to go there with him anymore. He said I was nuts. A few months later, I saw an article in our local paper that the place had been shut down because the owner was trapping pigeons on the roof of his business, and serving them as chicken.

Pigeons on city roofs are controlled with poison as their droppings do a lot of damage. It became obvious how the place could serve such large portions for such a low price.

Yeah, testing always feels like overkill.

But if you test and you find out a squirrel has arsenic levels where 5 in a year would cause blindness, you'd want to know. Unlikely, sure. That level of arsenic you'd probably be able to taste.

But if your house is sitting on an abandoned gold mine tailings pond and you didn't know, in that case you'd feel silly not spending the money.

If you enjoy taking them dead you can make money by selling the tails for fly fishing lures to the lure companies.
Yeah, I do the same. Corvid wings and feathers desirable too. I you stash them in the freezer for a few months, you can build up a nice little stockpile. It’s a sustainable way to get some pellet money.

Wrote about it here

Where I live, squirrels are a nuisance and there’s no season on them. Shot quite a few and never did anything wit them.

My thoughts are that living in the city, I have no idea what they may have gotten into or eaten, and therefore I haven’t thought eating them to be a good idea.

Any other city people eat any squirrels they shoot?
I live in a sort of rural area but close enough to a few cities. I've been eating squirrels out of my yard for years. I always just check for abseses or other things that look weird like spotty livers etc. Make sure they are well done and you should be fine!
