EdGun Leshiy full review (after 5 months & 5K pellets)

DISCLAIMER 1: there will be a lot of numbers in this paragraph so... you've been worn, lol!

DISCLAIMER 2: I set power at just below 17 Joule, which is equivalent of about 12.6 fpe energy. So it's an upgrade mainly for shooters in UK and couple more EU countries with 15 to 17 Joule limit. But this review is valid also for 20-22 fpe shooters and I come to this in last section. 

It's been a while since I posted my review, and as you might have seen I've tried HUMA regulator (standard one) and my shot count increased vs. original reg by about 20% and reached after tuning (in .22) up to roughly 60 shots from full charge of 300 bar. When I switched to .177cal barrel, my shot count (at below 17J energy) dropped to max 52 shots with JSB Exact Heavy 10.3 grains pellets and even less with JSB Exact 8.4 grains (46 shots). But there are some guys, who never give up... and after couple of months of experimenting HUMA together with Wingman unveiled new sub-12 fpe reg/plenum kit. And after another couple of weeks they upgraded the kit with internal plenum restrictor (that black plastic tube, not the valve air-flow restrictor, which should be removed if you got one installed) to increase efficiency even more.

[EDITED PARAGRAPH] So I was offered to try that new plenum with volume restrictor. Installation is fairly easy, you need just to empty cylinder (with 2mm allen key), unscrew old reg, shorten your valve stem with razor blade (there’s an awesome tutoral on YouTube and on HUMA website), screw in new plenum, insert reg and screw cylinder back in place. Go to YT, check that tutorial, it’s easy. 

BTW, I used my old HUMA regulator set at 110 bar vs 90 bar (I used 90 with old bigger plenum). But if you order a complete package from HUMA you’ll get it in package: plenum, spring, regulator and plenum restrictor. Actually I received also shortened valve stem but as I said normally you’d need to shorten yours by yourself. I realised that only now and that’s why I edited the paragraph.

After couple of shots I dialed in muzzle energy at 222 m/s, which makes 16.5 Joune (12.20 fpe) with .177 JSB Heavy (10.3g) to stay easily within my limit. On the same HST setting I reached only 15.8 Joule (11.5 fpe) with standard 8.4g JSB, which clearly shows that heavy ammo is way more efficient. That is slightly more than HUMA's official UK settings but I wanted to be close to my local limit, which slightly exceeds 12 fpe.

I measured 3 strings from 300 bar down to 110 bar to make sure. I was waiting 1 min between each 10 shots. The result? 90 good shots on average! NINE ZERO. Stability is very good too: average Vo was 221m/s with first 88 shots at max spread -3m/s to +4 m/s. After 110 bar mark it becomes less stabile. OK, that could be still usable down to 100 bar but I don't consider it stabile enough for my standards. So bottom line: I've got about 90 good shots from 300 bar to 110 bar with enough shot-to-shot consistency to hit a penny at my usual distances.

Now THAT is a substantial difference. Of course, that is mainly due to the size of new plenum and huma regulator, as you can see it's only half the size of original reg (or less). Of course, the original one was designed for MUCH higher power output, preferably in .25 cal, and that's why it was set in factory at 130 bar even with that massive plenum. But for some EU countries, with more strict regulations for shooting in open fields, that new HUMA is just such a welcome upgrade. Is it worth 95 EUR price? Well... considering it doubles the shot count... absolutely! And as far as I know .22 is even more efficient with up to crazy 120 shots! I'll surely try also .22 but so far that heavy .177 is most accurate for me at 17J power level. Also that new plenum can be used without delrin insert for mid-power and it should be great for about 20-22 fpe, it should also vastly increase number of shots vs standard one as it takes way less space inside air cylinder (so you can pump much more air into that tube).

Actually I still have the same printed setup as well. Sound is similar, but precision of Donny’s CNC milled metal insert is way better than printed insert so it *can* have positive influence on downrange accuracy at 50y and more. Also I have no plan to change from long to short and back very often, because it DOES change point of impact. So my long setup will stay for good. And in such a case I decided to get a superbly precize solution from Donny. Would it matter at 25y? Not at all. At 50y? Maybe? At 75y? I think so, also because I can mode my 350mm barrel and make it 280mm - it will be still very quiet and should be more accurate and more air efficient than 250mm barrel. 

and last but not least... I just find Donny’s solution much more elegant than the 2-piece plastic insert. Leshiy is my favorite PCP of all I’ve ever had and if I can make it perfect - I will absolutely do! Cost is not low, but not prohibitive either compared to our guns, scopes, etc.


 
I love this gun but decided to model up an alternate full-sized grip for mine. Included storage in the bottom for a reserve cache of pellets. This grip is printed in nylon and carbon fiber but the design would work fine on most any 3d printer. If anyone wants to print their own and try it I am happy to share the STL file free of charge. I love this gun even more now :)
