EdGun questions

Hi,

I practically have no experience with air rifles and I have no experience with PCP. I used to shoot rabbits with one of those gamo single shot break open gun but that's about it. Most of my shooting experience is with shotguns and rifles. I may be moving to Japan pretty soon and PCPs are 3 times more expensive in Japan so I would like to get it in the U.S. I am most interested in an Edgun Matador R3M but somewhere on the internet I read that R4 is coming out???

so

Purpose of getting a PCP

1) It take a little less time to get PCP license in Japan than a firearm (I'm a shotgunner and shoot over 12k round/year so I'll eventually get my shotgun over to Japan but it will take quite some time so something to fill the gap)

2) I want to shoot crow/ravens, pigeons, ducks, pheasants with a PCP

3) I'm guessing PCPs are more quiet than a shotgun so that's nice.

Why I want a Matador?

1) It looks cool

2) I saw it on Ted's Holdover

3) I like Russian designs

4) PCPs are pretty much treated like a firearm in Japan and it's a pain in the ass to get a license (3+ month to get approved) and each PCP/firearm needs to be approved by the police so I don't want to get an entry level gun and be stuck with it. I'd rather be stuck with a top of the line PCP and blame myself for not practicing enough.

Questions I have.

1) What if it breaks? Is it easy to fix? (I don't think many people know to work on this in Japan) Can I just get poop load of replacement parts to Japan and fix it myself when things break?

2) Is R4 coming out soon? Will multishot version of .30 cal be available?

3) Compared to an over and under shotgun, how much effort doest it take to maintain a matador functional?

4) Can you get a bigger shroud to make a matador even more quiet?

5) Where can I get a .25 cal Matador R3M Long (590mm barrel)? Talon Air's website did not specify the length of the barrel.

I will be very grateful if you could provide me some suggestions.

Thank you in advance!

I'm liking how Vulcan Tactic look. It's pretty cool! I guess if the dealer doesn't even have a reliable supply of edgun I'll be pretty ****ed if my PCP breaks in Japan XD

I actually have a few friends in Japan who own AR15, M1A, M1 Garand, and Saiga 12/20. Semi auto shotguns and rifles are permitted but it's a pain in the ass to get the permit. You need to own shotguns and hunt with them for 10 years before you can even apply for a hunting rifle(anything over 6mm) license. You can hunt from September to the end of March (end of April in some please) and you can even get permit to permit to hunt year round if you know the right people. Owning firearms/PCP is just a huge pain in the ass and a huge money pit (takes about 600 usd to get a gun license and it needs to be renewed every 3 years or so) so not many people get gun unless someone hunts in your family.

Texas sounds nice but there's no trespassing in Japan. You can hunt on private property unless the owner fence his entire property out and post sign that says no hunting. That makes hunting a lot easier =p I live in Colorado now but it's pain in the ass to figure out where you can hunt and you need to be super careful not to trespass because landowner don't have to post signs or fence off his property.

How reliable are Vulcans?

Lots of people at the TAG forum know about repairing Edguns so there is some great info there. http://talonairgun.com/forum/ Seems to be some good videos on youtube. I don't know what the part shipping situation is in Japan so I would look at that first. I had a single shot one for a while. The metal work was excellent but it was hands down the least comfortable grip I've ever had on a gun. Some people end up modifying them.

KO301 if your buying an Edgun R3 buy a 25 cal. Stay far away from the 30 cal Edgun R3. Many owners posting reliability issues for months. Edgun has not been able to repair them or offered a refund. Edgun owner states he is working on a fix and tells unhappy customers to sit tight. The US distributor for Edgun is Tony R at [email protected]. Tony is a nice guy and I found him to be a man of his word.

That said if I was in the market for a hunting 25 cal bullpup it would be a Cricket or Vulcan from R&L Airguns. Both reliable guns with proven CZ barrels. I personally like the magazine/loading process a lot better with Crickets.

30 cal it would be an FX Impact from AoA. If your shipping address is not in the US you can buy FX airguns at Krale to save some money. Krale has an excellent reputation and they warranty/service FX airguns. http://www.krale-schietsport.nl/en/wapens/luchtgeweren-def.html#!/limit=32&p=clear&manufacturer=174&dir=asc

A couple of Impact reviews.

Just paid for my R3M Long in .25 cal. Now the waiting game begins!!!

I would like to mount Hawke Side Winder 30 6~24 on this thing. Do I nedd medium ring or high ring??? Or are there better scope recommendations? I don't know much about airgun hunting... I used to use Swarovski Z5 3.5~18 on my Blaser R8 in 30-06 and I could shoot sub MOA all day long so I'm guessing 24 power is enough for under 100 yards. Do I need more than 24 power or 24 power is too much zoom???

Thanks!!!

The fix is in for all the Edgun .30's that had issues. Both Gen 1 and Gen 2. The Gen 1's require a new 3mm valve stem and heavy hammer. I have one (Gen 1) and it shoots beautifully now. Ed just came out with the Gen 2 "fix kit" and is sending them out to owners at no charge. Better late than never. Anyway, I don't think there will be any new R3 .30's in the US anytime soon until maybe the R4 hits next year. According to Ed he only made 200 .30's total but not sure how many made it State side.
