EDGun R5M cocking/indexing?

I’ve read some posts in the past year or so about issues with the forward cocking of the R5M being glitchy and not that reliable. I’ve experienced unreliable indexing also on an R5M. I was told that I needed to “learn how to cock the gun properly and to watch how Ed does it on his videos”. Wow, really? Learn to cock a gun?

On mine before it was remedied (not by EDGun since I was told the indexing was non adjustable) the mag would slightly over-rotate about half the time. So then the forward motion would stop and jam the pellet against the breech. I had to stop each time and click it back slightly to allow the cocking motion to continue. 

I’ve owned two R5Ms and only one had this problem, but I’ve read other AGN members talking about this so I’m pretty sure it’s not just me. And FYI, I know how to cock an Airgun. Anyone else have this problem, and if so, how did you fix it? I’m going to limit my inquiry to just this please, and not get into the substandard accuracy issues, more than likely due to the mag indexing problems...

Just FYI, I have two EDGun single shot rifles an .22 R3 Long and an .25 R5 Super Magnum, and a gen1 .20 Lelya, and really like all of them.

Slightly digressing from your question, but you mentioned substandard accuracy possibly due to the magazine indexing issue. This makes sense, but I'm curious if there is a single shot tray for the R5M which could allow you to test that hypothesis?

I never got around to it, but I haven’t seen one for the R5M. The gun was useless to me with its mag indexing issues.

If you are cocking with both levers (both sides) you are doing it wrong and it's not latching. Use either side, but one side only.

Mag indexing, you need to rotate it backwards when loading the mag until it sets the latch.

Good one... of course I was only cocking one side at a time. I no longer own the gun. Yep, did that when inserting the mag, say maybe a hundred times. Still had issues.

I haven’t had any problems with my R5M and the 4 magazines that I use.

12 code is probably wrong from the factory

A friends R5M had the oposite problem, less than 1 pellet move

The movement of the lever its the same at all calibers, the movement of mag 9,10,11 made by this plate

if you have other cal mags try them to be sure

Thanks. We ended up opening up the inlet, tapering and chamfering the area where the pellet enters the breech. Probably cured the symptom but not the cause. I was told by Ed and Brian that there was nothing that could be done and told to learn to cock the gun properly. I’m pretty sure I know how to cock a gun seeing as I recently won two EBR events and came in 7th in another.

I've read several posts complaining they're hard to cock but haven't run across the indexing problems. I personally love the side cocking on the EDguns, a short, quick backward/forward movement that, at least to me, doesn't require much effort. it's what drew me to Edgun's in the first place.

I agree it’s easy for me to rack the bolt. It’s tons easier to cock than my Brocock Bantam Sniper HR. Ed’s I’m thinking 10 year old daughter doesn’t look like she has any trouble cocking the R5M in all of his videos...

Yeah, maybe I am worthless and weak and don’t know how to cock the gun even though I’ve owned two R5M’s ;( Do you think it’s even possible that the R5M I had, and others that have been reported, didn’t function well? I mean, just a tiny chance that the R5M isn’t perfect? 
I was very hesitant to post this for this very reason. I was pretty sure that all the Eddy R5M fanboys would jump on this like white on rice... PS., I can’t find where I said it was hard to cock. Somebody help me out here?

No problems with the mag indexing on my R5M in .25cal. Sorry you had a problem with your R5M Centercut which ruined your experience. Sometimes we get lemons. If there was a high number of R5Ms' that had magazine indexing problems, I wouldn't have bought one. However, I did have a problem one time when the bolt was cycled to the rear, it would get stuck and it would be hard to move the bolt forward. It was a simple remedy. The screw for the anti-double load lever just needed to be tightened down. 



In this pic below, you could see that the anti-double load lever is loose. When the charging handle is cycled, the rod that is attached to the lever gets caught on the indexing plate. 

The rod is supposed to be on top of the indexing plate so that when the anti-double load lever is pushed down, it moves the indexing plate away from the magazine.

Thanks, interesting info. That wasn’t my case since as soon as I slightly rotated the mag back from its minor over rotation, the bolt could be moved forward. And if I pulled the lever back and manually rotated the mag it worked perfectly.

While I never had an issue with indexing on my R5M even when racking it as fast as I could I doubt you could be doing it wrong as it is very straight forward. Honestly was my favorite way to cock a gun over side lever and bolt and the ambidextrous was awesome! If only it was easy to single load id still own it. Mine was a .22 though so not sure if caliber makes a difference. And it was very accurate pellets and slugs just ask davidsng he owns it now and competed with it at EBR and Trenier.

I'm wondering if it's a .25 thing as I feel like those are the ones I've heard people complaining about accuracy wise but there's some very accurate ones out there also so IDK

Thanks. The lemon was .25, as was my other one that didn’t have the problem. The problem was fixed after many hours trying different solutions... it ended up shooting the King’s accurately (dime group at 50 yards) but we never did get it to shoot the Heavies more accurately than quarter size at 50 yards. Yes, I talked to @davidsng at EBR, very nice looking gun and he shot well.

Did you took of the block and inspect all the screws around the rotating metal ?

Mine has the problem as described by Mikepr. I haven't got it working to my satisfaction yet. I'm with Centercut on the frustration. I would like to know how many people that would suggest I'm just doing it wrong can disassemble, reassemble, headspace, and time multiple weapon systems with a blindfold on. I have operated in the range from .17 cal to anti-tank missile. I have diagnosed and fixed problems with many of these along the way. I shot more pellets before age 17 than a lot of us have in a lifetime. So I stand up here to say that people smarter than your average rock are having problems with an R5M indexing. I have beat my head against this problem for too long. I have exhausted all suggestions as of yet save 2. Mikepr has suggested shimming, and It was also suggested to me that I have faulty magazines. I am about to be able to try a new magazine from a different vendor in hopes that it will cure my woes. I hope so. I have returned the rifle to the same condition it was received in new. Removing the huma , replacing the untouched factory reg, and readjusting the hammer spring tension. I'm putting away the 34 grain pellets and using the Kings as I'm told the heavies cause problems. That's a whole other issue. She was having a hard time indexing any pellets, so I will only feed her kings to test fixes. I can't wait to test the new mag. Please forgive the ranting quality of this post. I'm very disappointed in the function of the single most expensive new gun I have ever purchased.
