Edgun R5M Super CHEAP/EASY Fix to the "Puff of Air to the Face"

Edguns simplicity of design paid off for me. Even a person with very little mechanical knowledge (like myself) can figure out an Edgun and avoid shipping it off to a "professional". I had a small puff of air escape the breach on mine. After a little testing, I zeroed in and found the exact problem. The fix was unbelievably cheap and easy.

Nice little hack man! I suspect that you'll get a few more FPS back with this too. Just wish there was a low tech solution for my rifle (same issue)

Yes! Sure it will. Accuracy too! It's already almost shooting moa ten shot groups! This will only help.

I've own eight airguns. Everyone of them (except my Lelya 2.0) had many more issues than this. Some where horribly inaccurate, others broke all the time, others leaked, others I had to send back bc they didnt even shoot, one was so bad I threw it away rather than sell it...t

In reality this is really minor to all the other issues i had with airguns. Airguns are 10x more difficult than firearms. Tolerances are completely unforgiving.

I just shot an AK47, it was 10x more violent and unpleasant, than my R5M's little puff of air. Nobody is calling out AK. Give Edgun a break, they are doing more right than the rest of the airguns I've owned- including Hatsan, Benjamin, Gamo, Ataman,...ect.

I'm trying to figure this one out. Went on my first squirrel hunt the other day and got the "puff" from my R5 .30. It's got about 1200 shots on it since new last May. Decent amount of take-downs from testing slugs and pellets. Yesterday dropped in a new breach o-ring I got from Brian with the gun. Problem solved in 5 minutes. Probe side of the o-ring obviously worn. I'll slam a new one in now occasionally. We do know that o-ring material has a shelf life right. I know from my Military contract days were we had to date and verify inventory. It's not real easy to measure o-rings that are giving up a bit when compressed. These Edguns are easier to work on than anything I've played with. I find it hard to believe a fresh o-ring doesn't solve the problem. Maybe for longevity use a different material like Viton that I hear Daystate users are doing if it's too much of a problem doing simple maintenance.

Another thing to pay attention to is that the clearance of the breech to the transfer port thimble is pretty close. Some may be a little too tight and others just won’t tolerate any contamination. As torque is applied to the breech screw you may notice a very small amount of deflection of the tab where the breech screw goes. This deflection in somewhat proportional to the lack of compression we want on the probe ORing. Lube the exposed part of the TP thimble and the ID of the forward area of the breech. When assembling, tap the breech fwd with a small deadblow device. I first discussed this over the phone with a forum member experiencing the same thing. I am told that after doing this a couple times it sort of wears in and does not feel so snug and difficult to remove.

Not saying this is a complete fix, but it is something to consider.

Okay guys. I did some of research on your thoughts.

MikeVW, The thickness of my two shims are 0.47mm.

Technoman, I took the breach oring out of my Lelya. They both looked the same but when I measured them with a caliper they were just a hair different in size. I don't know if it was because they were two different types, or were different because the R5M flattens them. I switch them out (put the Lelya's into the R5m, R5M's into the Lelya) and took out the shims. Now I have neither have puff of air in my face when I fire them (even with no shims in place). 

This is interesting. My Lelya has over 4,000 shots and I never experience this. The former owner of my R5M put only a few tins through it, I only put 200-250 rounds (and I always had the puff).

After speaking with you guys, I would recommend trying a new breach O-ring first. If you don't have one on hand, use the shim method until you find one that works. 

I don't think it is any issue with the gun anymore, just the breach O-ring not being "beefier" enough.

I had one of the early .30 R5 Eddys in the states. It had the puff and due to my cheek-weld and head position, it went directly in my ear. I changed the probe oring many many times. It would stop for a bit but would always intermittently come back and usual at the worst time. It seemed much worse in colder conditions. 

With this being said, my friend tried a 75D Viton oring in his .25 R5M and it has held fine with no puff for 6-7 months now.
