mrdirect; 1st thanks to everyone who responded to my query and saved me making a fool of myself again. The reason I asked this question is that my FX Bobcat factory LDC has 5 sections, 4 of which have a baffle, this count includes the end cap as a baffle. I purchased 1 section (no baffle) in addition to the original 4. My Talon SS has about 4 baffles in it's designed to break up and redirect or "miss" direct the sound waves. My Daina AMO8 factory LDC has a "hair curler" wrapped with a layer of foam. The design for the power burner "sound moderator" is to provide room for hot gas expansion, buffering (metallic wool) and baffling (steel washers) to cool the gases thus reducing their volume more and the report. With airguns there are no high temperature gases so no steel wool buffering or baffling etc. The expanding air cools as it expands in the barrel and in the LDC chamber. The larger the internal cavity of the LDC the softer the report. Baffles can break up the sound waves to reduce intensity of the report and buffering can absorb some of the sound wave energy. The .117 uses the least volume of pressurized air and makes best use of the LDC chamber. Each increase in caliber is more difficult to "soften" due to more air volume. Longer barrels help slightly. The larger the LDC cavity the softer the report. Buffering and baffling tends to slow the exit of the high pressure air but is not nearly as effective as the long VENTED shrouds which gives the hi pressure air multiple escape openings instead of just the one at the end of the LDC. I believe there may be an effect in the manner the vents are "angle cut" into the LDC chamber. Also a vented shroud allows a longer path ( increased volume) and the vents can be placed further apart. My vote is for a shroud extend past the end of the barrel with a single cone baffle as the talon SS baffle which will redirect and allowing a portion of the air to reverse back along the barrel to be exhausted out shroud vent cuts. I must state I hold no degree in science. Just lots of reading and study and reflection. And a desire for REAL mouse fart report from my airgun. I wish I had access to a lathe. For your shooting range I once was able to use a large non portable modulator made of old tires bolted together through their side walls (no wheels) to form a tunnel and the tires were stuffed with sound batt leaving a tunnel to see and fire through, ( fiber glass, rock wool, ect.) For an airgun 13" tires, atv, wheel barrow, etc. might work well. You're just creating a large LDC chamber. To me a mouse fart is a whisper.
