Essential Checklists - What to bring with you at Competition, Hunting, Etc.

I’m the last person to say what you should take or not take. I think you need to be prepared. (Boy Scout thing)

A few of us have been getting together every year and for ten days to two weeks hunt prairie dogs. I’ve had an o ring failure I had to drive fifty miles out of the way to get a replacement. Another hunter had a part failure we had to drive two and a-half hours one way to get a tool to work on the gun. So I’m not casting any shade on equipment list.

What we did learn from several years of these long outings is to bring a backup gun just in case. But this the exception not the rule because we are out in the middle of nowhere and we can’t afford (literally) to hunt and not have an operational gun to do so.

On long, competitive match trips I take only the basic tools to work on the gun which is mostly a set of quality Allen wrenches. When I went to the Nats and to EBR everything I took easily fit in a daypack with room for bottles of water and some grain bars.

When I go to the range and even local matches I only take what I need to put ammo down range and a few refreshments.

But don’t sweat it. Over time you will learn what you need and don’t need to take and enjoy shooting.

DA#M if i carried half this stuff id need porters to carry everything .
I hear ya! The idea is to make sure that we list everything and leave it to the shooter's discretion to take the stuff or not. The way I see it is that we used to go rustic camping a lot, so you only pack in what you need, but you have extra supplies in the truck at the parking lot that you probably won't need, but don't want to have hours away if you in fact DO need that gadget or whatever.

That was a great suggestion @davecole ! I added that to the list on most of the checklists.

You know, I have always brought an ammo box that has my "stash" of o-rings and springs with me just about wherever I go, but I didn't list that specifically, so I added it to the majority of the lists. That was a great addition! Thanks for the input!

Again, these lists have evolved fantastically as a result of all of your help!! Thank you so much!!! This may help somebody not have to drive for hours out of their way, and that is a "win" as far as I am concerned!! Great job everyone!! (y)

@ Skeeter- as time has moved on, me personally, ive come to realize a few more important things to make sure and have when deciding to leave the comforts of your home with everything at hand. Just a few more things I’ve added-
• Zip ties, wether to clasp on a ribbon on your barrel end to check on wind, or to zip tie a game tag onto game species
• if planning for the worse like possibly repairing a pcp on site, bring not only the o rings but the silicone lubes, pic tools, mini torch for stubborn fasteners, and a good all around gun grease for action slides.
• a roll up rubber mat, like a piece of yoga mat. Wether to add comfort to your rump during a sit under a tree while still hunting, or something to lay over a wood/concrete bench to perform surgery on your gun, a padded mat is a welcome addition

Love your lists!

I also am a fan of lists.
Something that I did not see on there-
Amongst the ammo and rifles, knives, etc. Is a basic aid kit.
With all the sharp and puncture-making equipment, you may also consider some life-saving gear.
Even simple things such as aspirin and heartburn medication or Ace bandages for sprains or bandaids & antibiotic ointment For cuts & scrapes are helpful.
I have a kit I take along shooting that has a tourniquet and chest seals, As well as an assortment of other items that could help if there is a problem (like anti-diarrhea tablets, lol)
Most injuries are minor, like sprains and cuts, and I will probably never use some things I have in there.
But, you need to think that when things go, wrong-they usually go really wrong.
Anyway thank you for the well thought-out lists.

I'm going to pilfer some of them😉

That was a GREAT addition! So glad you suggested it!! I will definitely put that on the Hunting List!

That's why we bring all this stuff...in hopes that it is for nothing and never needed, but if it is, it can ruin your whole day. Even if you just have half this stuff sitting in your truck, you should have it...but basic first aid, IMHO, is essential.

I'm going to pilfer some of them😉
Please do!! That is what they are here for!! (y)

Toilet paper.:p
OMG!!! I can't believe I missed this one!! I am such a HUGE proponent of always having toilet paper. I keep a half roll in my truck, ALWAYS, in case you stop at an unaccommodating rest stop or whatever. Also about 1/4 roll in my hiking backpack...but not on my lists?!?! 😲 WTF was I thinking...or not! Again, a great, and essential, suggestion!!

I'll get these on the main list. Thanks again for your input!!!
