Exactly how many is too many

For the last couple years I’ve kind of vanished from the airgun forums / community to follow other interests and hobbies. Now over the last few months I’ve come full circle and rediscovered my love for airguns and modifying them. I’ve jumped from brand to brand, and have held onto my favourites and let the others go. Now for the serious question. How many guns can one own before it becomes apparent that you simply have too many? A few pics of why I’m asking the question. And feeling a bit shameful that that’s not the entire collection.

One more than what gives you pleasure in owning.

For some who take pleasure in collecting or owning a variety this is a large number. For others that own only what they shoot regularly it can be a small number. For me it’s four rifles and two pistols. One more of each than I make time to shoot. Having more for sake of having more for me just leads to dissatisfaction/frustration from not being able to use the additional airguns often enough.

And here I thought I had a problem. If I knew my checking account number I would be purchasing one of those HW 30N LE's shortly.

Three, after that they start to get repetitive.

Have to be able to justify purchase, though sometimes I'm stretching it. Only bought one for, "joy of ownership," that's a slippery slope. Last purchase was a year ago. Considered RTI MORA, in .357, for larger feral/pest control but price roadblocked. Picked up a $600 Snowpeak M60B .35 to try out caliber, so far, so good. WM

In my case it just happened one day when I walked into my gun room. I had a WTH are you doing moment. The next problem is when you only own dialed in top quality guns. It’s easy to sell off sub performers. Not easy when the gun performs to my standards. I‘ve recently sold off four guns. I based my decision on do I have another gun that can fill in for the loss and what gun can I offer to someone that is almost guaranteed to make them happy purchasing used. The last part seems to be a hurdle a lot of guys just can’t get over. Is it sunken cost syndrome? Is the gun worth more to you than facing the reality of what it’s truly worth? I personally price a used gun so the buyer isn’t already pissed off before he receives it.

We all know when we over pay for something. Used or new because we want it so bad. But I believe that taints the whole buying experience out of the gate. And that’s partially the reason why guys get so mad and bash products that don’t live up to their expectations. They are already mad that they paid too much.

Luckily I'm overjoyed to own the 3 that I do. I have curiosity about some other guns but nothing that has pushed me into A) selling one of my beloved guns to fund another or B) overstepping the boundaries of my (our) fixed income. I remember to be grateful for guns that in one way or another check every box for me. I mean, really, isn't that what we're all searching for?

View attachment 544841I If you never use them then you have too many. I never buy for looks only by function and need not want. how many different ammo is made for it. Never buy top dollar pcps. Just keep it simple. I'm a hunter so maybe this is easier for me.

For decades I had one airgun, a FWB 124, that took care of all my needs.

After 20 years of hard use, the piston seal failed and while researching parts and information I stumbled across PCPs. I couldn't believe the accuracy, range and power they claimed. So I had to find out for myself and got seduced by the "dark side".

A dozen PCPs and a dozen or so SSPs, springers, and muti-pump rifles and pistols later I have enough airguns for all of the disciplines I'm interested.

So, to answer the OP's question, there's no exact number of airguns. The quantity depends on your budget, available space, time and, if applicable, your spouse.

In my case, I've run out of room to store any more. 😁

I solved the trigger time issue by setting up a lottery with two jars. The gun who gets drawn from the "to be shot" jar goes to the spot by the door and its token transferred to the "has been shot" jar. No closet queens, all get fair trigger time. 🙂

Cheers!

I'm sorry this is not on topic but I just really want to know, what is the silver Beeman next to the HW 75?? I've seen the two tone Beeman and the HW two tone but I always wondered why they never made a complete silver one.. it's absolutely beautiful! in my opinion much better looking than two tone.
years ago I had a Beeman P1 in 177 standard blue or black, whichever they are.. very good shooter.
