EBR 9.5 in the Northeast!
We were having a Great stretch of weather here in the Northeast, so no better time to shoot our Extreme Benchrest 9.5 - Lockdown Edition targets! A quick decision was made and 3 of us got together to make it happen. This past Monday (11/9) we descended on a backyard in the Northern fringes of Finger Lakes Region of New York to give EBR a try! Now, we all shoot field target and are inexperienced to say the least when it comes to benchrest.
The range was set! 75 yard target on the left and 100 yard on the right
The weather was temperature in the mid 70’s. light variable winds from 4 - 8 mph and mostly sunny.
First up is Paul Manktelow. Paul shot the targets using his FX Crown 0.177………….yep, his 0.177 Hunter PCP field target rifle!! The rifle is topped with a Hawke FFP 6-24x50.
Some time earlier in the day was set aside to shoot some practice targets and get a feel for the holds and clicks for the 75 and 100 yard targets. Paul shot his 75 yard target first and the results were a 190 w/ 1X using a 0.30” diameter scoring device.
Next up was Paul’s 100 yard target attempt. Shooting the 0.177 that additional 25 yards definitely opened things up a bit…….but not too bad! The score for Paul’s 100 yard target was 131 w/ 0X. Definitely not bad shooting with the 10.3 gr JSB’s at 890 fps in the slight to moderate breeze.
Next up was myself, Greg Shirhall. I had every intention to be using my 0.22 Air Venturi Avenger, but it was not cooperating. I’d have a shot right on, then have one go 2 mil-dots in a whole different who knows direction. So, the set-up of choice was my wifes 0.22 Falcon FN-19 topped with a Mueller 8-32x44 and I was using an older tin (the silver label ones) of JSB 15.8gr Jumbos.
Now, don’t laugh! As you can see by the tree shadows, the sun was coming straight at us, so I fabbed a sun shade out of a 8.5” x 11” 75 yard sample target. It worked PERFECTLY!
My first target was my 100 yard target/ Had a 168 w/ 2X. Definitely a difference that additional 25 yards make!!
Next up was my 75 yard target. Now if only my very last 5 shots started appearing much earlier! Finished up with a 216 w/ 4X. Hit the pellet challenge right at the cross of the “T”..nope, didn’t get that pesky pellet!
The remaining shooter of our group for the day was Doug Rogers. Doug used a 0.22 RTI Prophet that he was testing out. It was topped with A Sightron SIII 10-50x60. He chose a tin of JSB 25.39gr redesigned. This was the first time Doug shot this beyond 20 yards. A quick sight-in session and it was time to shoot for score.
Dougs first target was the 75 yarder. He ended with a 191 w/ 0X. Not bad for for the first time shooting the RTI at distance and not a bunch of pellet testing to see what she eats the best.
Last but not least and with the sun fading, Dougs 100 yard attempt yielded a 141 w/0X.
A BIG thanks goes out to Airguns of Arizona for putting on this event! With the way this whole year has gone and continues to go, this got us, and I’m sure many others, out of our normal comfort zone and out competing in something we probably wouldn’t have tried. We all had a great time! Thanks again AOA!!!
