Fat barrel

Have also wondered for years of the same but yes, they are slowly starting to increase the barrel thickness on larger caliber. I feel thats where its at anyway, .30 cal. Id love a 1.2" RF blank milled up and cut by Lothar in a 1:36-1:40 twist. Bet that bad boy shoot lasers! I think the Panda is the closest thing really out there now with a thicker barrel.
 
The primary purposes of a heavy barrel on a PB are reduced barrel harmonics and heat dissipation. Airguns produce negligible heat and tiny harmonics. You'd really just be adding weight.

Heat dissipates quicker with thinner barrels than thicker...its not dissipation but rather the ability to just, not melt/deform...more integrity retention than heat dissipation. Retaining bore integrity also applies to harmonics.

I think the receiver needs to be bored out to accommodate bull barrels..

Not necessarily, you could turn down the barrel where it goes into the receiver as well, the thickness going in where there are points of contact/retention isn't as crucial as the unsupported length of barrel.

Most airgun receivers aren't stout enough to hang a Fat barrel off of. Not designed for it to begin with.

For most matches the use of heavier guns helps them stay planted better and a heavy barrel is a good way to weight or balance a rifle.

Yes, also Fat barrels are stiffer.

Someday I'd like a pcp with a Fat barrel.

1.2" diameter barrel — on an airgun....
Mmmm, not sure — even on a large caliber .30cal there would be:
0.3" (7.6mm) hollow, surrounded by
0.6" (15mm) of steel wall all around
That would be 3 times the barrel wall compared to the diameter (caliber).


I'm quite happy with my RTI barrels — they are 0.6" (15mm) in diameter and feel very solid and inflexible, even at 60mm in .30cal....


But what do I know.... I'm still pretty green when it comes to barrels and interior ballistics.

Yup or similar. Just want to try, been curious for a long time. Dont have a lathe or feel like spending a ton to have one made so it will stay a curiosity for me.
 
I goona do one as my next & hopefully final project as it will take $ & time. Basically a pcp rail gun with RAW action. The barrel will be clamped in gunsmith barrel clamps & air/ regs etc.. all ran external, so no bottle clearance issues. The action will not see no stress. I'm going to make it extremely heavy ....
but for now I have barrels turned to .71 & .75 then machined for action. .625 ish for RAW & no internal oring so easy peasy. I have a Shilen bieng action fit now & will be fun to play with. RF barrels are over looked & shouldn't be as spec varies on these............. there are pb ,30 barrels out there that will work in air land. Kreiger is one of them. a .30 "tite"

Ah, that's a good idea to test with!
 
Back in the day, bull barrels selling point was maximizing heat dissipation and then all the surface cuts etc for more exposed surface area ... run cool was the game. I'm sure harmonics play into it as well, but I was a plinker at the time ... would run 400 to 500 rounds in a day with my dragons. Heat starts affecting those barrels. The little I've read about pellet < between > slug barrels is interesting and worth a look. I'm not sure what benefit this gives the air gun world that a barrel shroud already provides? Regardless, I've learned that weight does matter and that factor means more to me as I've aged.

What twist rate will you use? Also, slugs or pellets?
