Field Target for Fun?

Other than following the power requirements. I would like to be able to show up at a match with my 18 FPE PCP, range finder, bipod (attached to gun), and a bucket too! And simply shoot the match for fun. I don’t own or foresee owning such a variety of sweet reactive targets. So I’m there to see how many I can knock down, no scorecard submitted at the end. Do field target matches allow such a thing? We understand that knocking down reactive targets is fun… why not a “fun class”, where scores will not be submitted. The clubs still get the match fees, the serious players are not affected. And the “funners” fun gunners enjoy a novelty shoot. And if they start to “get serious” they can migrate to the other classes?

You could try but chances are they will not let you shoot during the match if you do not fall into one of the established classes. It the match director at your match allows unlimited class, then you are good to go. otherwise, most of us shoot thru the course again after the match. That would be the perfect time for you to have some fun!
Thx
Dan

Where do you live? I’m sure all you have to do is talk to the local match director to see if they would let you.

Just a great idea !!!
With all the drama of those in recent threads elsewhere on this FT forum. The idea of just Knock the dang target down will get more folks involved in some version of the Field target game. If a Match Director feels that his clubs activities are best suited to a much looser format than AATFA rules dictate ( If generally followed by said club ) then more power too the MD and kudos to the clubs success of having more folks having a good time !!

Due to recent forum conversations, Acknowledged is the SVFTC club which in recent years has Lost more AAFTA players ( Those who travel outside club shoots ) than Gained, so we are going to reformat somewhat come the 2023 season.

In terms of "INQUIRE" by those realizing we as an Air Gun club exist, a good percentile Can't or don't join us due to the Constraints we as an AAFTA compliant club have placed upon outself. Caliber, Power & a specific game with general enforced AAFTA rules compliance have many of those already "Air Gunning" sadly in another spectrum of the sport we can't embrace currently.

This is going to change in the future. While WE will still play Field Target, the AAFTA class rule compliance we are likely to leave in the hands of individuals who travel outside club activities.
Having more "For Fun" events, Exploring Extreme FT at greater distances are ALL on the table for conversation.

The SVFTC last scheduled 2022 event in on October 23rd in IONE California ( Range 9 ) at the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center.
If a regular or wish to get a view of what we do, stop by and introduce yourself & say whats on your mind.

If you don’t mind travel you should contact Mike from Palmyra Sportsmens Association - shootermeb
they have a match on the 22nd and are most relaxed of all the area FT venues

PSA match on OCT 22

Mike from PSA here. We welcome you to come out and shoot however you'd like as long as your are under the 20fpe power limit. If you are using a laser range finder, I ask that you shoot last on the squad so no one can glean information from your tools. Any time you are not following the AAFTA rules, we ask you mark the scorecard in some way to indicate you are playing via a different ruleset; we do this for some behind the scenes scoring information we keep and to indicate your score is for funnsies.

I hope that every other club is accepting of any new casual shooters. I think everyone should try this game at least once.

I bet if you volunteer to help set up and take down at a match they would let you shoot "done" lanes. Lanes that all shooters have shot . the ranges i know usually set up targets early in the AM then run the match and take targets back in , lot of time and work specially if the targets are set on cement blocks . like most club few workers and lot of participants.

I used to compete in action shooting, IDPA, IPSC, 3 Gun. I helped setup and take down many COFs. I will attend a local match in November and see how I fare. Most shooting sports are populated with kind, generous and helpful folks. So am expecting it to be good, at worst I’ll shoot as the MD requires.
