Field Target ready (ish) - Thanks AGN!

Have been threatening to try FT (Hunter) for a while now, since learning that matches are occasionally held at a club within reasonable driving distance. Finished the last of my equipment prep tonight (marking scope wheel tape for ranging), and it occurred to me- nearly everything I’ve done to get set up for attending my first match has been gleaned, copied, or outright stolen from something I read here on the AGN forums.

  • Setting up scope for ranging
  • DOPE gathering for holdovers
  • Rifle & accessory tote
  • Seat type & height
  • Sticks type & height
  • Position building for seat/stick shooting

And so on. Might still score in the single digits, but it won’t be because I didn’t know about some requirement or how to prepare. All on me now. Still have a week plus to work on shooting from sticks, using the scope for range, & using holdover (had been a lifelong clicker until now).

All of this info is available elsewhere on the web, but it’s nice to have one stop shopping right here.

So if you’re one of the many who posted tips, tricks, or comments that us greenhorns find useful… THANK YOU!!!

FSA is the Fairfield Sportsmans Association located on River Road just North West of Cincinnati. You can Google the club for directions.
Looks like the next FT match is on 9-4-2022. They also shoot 100 Yard air rifle benchrest matches there as well.
If you go to the Baker Airguns site there is a schedule of all the FT and BR air rifle events in Ohio posted there. You can also search for '2022 Ohio airgun competition schedule' and should find the info for matches.

Edited to add-
The guys running the matches at FSA are Jeff Schwartz and Ryan Spanagel. Introduce yourself to either or both and they will see that you are taken care of.

Do not feel bad, or lonely due to lack of ranging skills or experience.

I think that the ranging aspect is the most difficult part of FT, right up there with a steady hold. We are all capable of showing up at a match with a rifle that will hold 1 inch at 50 yards assuming that we can hold it so that it can do its part. It is determining the yardage that always throws a wrench into the gears!

Talk to the guys and you will get LOTS of input on parallax ranging and bracketing to determine range. I absolutely suck at both techniques.....

If Donnie Reed shoots that match, be sure to pick his brain about bracketing. He has a pretty solid grasp of it and does well in Hunter class.
