Thats what i think is cool about the enclosed trailer when i built mine i only had about $3000 invested for everything and i still use it as my pickup truck and hauling my quad.

Valid point....if a guy doesn't go nuts on the conversion to camper, an enclosed trailer can still be exactly that, an enclosed trailer. I've used mine to move a couple times, to bring home rented equipment (stump grinder/trencher), to store stuff, etc.

For ease of use and convenience, yeah, a tent, as long as your match is in a place conducive to tenting. I've slept in this one LOTS of nights. Kinda outgrew it when my second son started coming to matches too. We got a slightly bigger one about two years ago, but I still prefer the little one, when it's just me, or just me and one son

Thanks.... just checked out used and a 2023 is about $38K give or take a couple $K.
Holy crap!! Mine was $22,500 (before tax, service agreement, etc) back in 2016. They are not any better used, mine has 137k and I see some 2016's with 150k+ goin for $16K.. If you can tow a trailer you'd save a bundle.

I had to laugh looking at carvana the other day vehicles with 80-100000 miles going for 80-90% of what they were new!

Curious
has anyone decked out a van for travel to various shooting or field target events?
I’m considering doing a build out of a travel van I can get to events with AND sleep in as hotels are pricey.
Not into big RV’s.
Been thinking of this for a long time now. Was going to do a popup but found out my vehicle cant handle it so tent it is! I put a hitch on so I can haul gear on it. a camper or van would be ideal though. do it up!

show us the setup inside!
IMG_5140.jpeg

It looks long in pic wide angle but the cooler goes under table, cloths and misc go above and my back us really screwed up and i can’t sleep flat so i throw my recliner in and sleep in that.
Its a v nose so all that built in comes just a bit past the v fits a full 4’x8’ on the floor and its tall enough that i have to just tip my head a bit to put on my pants

I wonder what the break-even point is? In other words, how many events would a person need to attend before the cost of buying and running a rig worked out to be cheaper than paying for the hotels?
I’ve been thinking about just this:
payback or cost savings are offset by convenience of having all your gear onboard,
being able to get to more remote areas without a rental vehicle,
moving at your own pace, etc.
the more you use it the less it costs or the better the payback.
I’ve considered towing a trailer because I can also leave the trailer on a site with hookups and then drive the truck to the events.
The smaller minivan campers are pretty cool too …
as vehicle size increases so do problems with parking, storage, security and maintenance and insurance.
Definitely lots of things to consider.
At 68 I am somewhat spoiled, thus comfort is a must.
ideally the setup would have to be rugged enough to deal with poorly maintained roads.
This is strictly a retirement/hobby related project, so I’m planning this as a two years to creation project - first trips will be closer to iron out the details and then take trips further away as I get better at this.

I think you’ve nailed it by saying that “the more you use it the less it costs or the better the payback”. That seems to be the key. If you acquire something and use it frequently, then it’s a pleasure. If you acquire something, and it just sits around, then it becomes a burden.

I was looking into a used small SUV or pickup I could camp in for going to archery shoots. The costs of adding another vehicle to our fleet were way higher than a couple nights in a hotel per month.
When my truck bed is done rotting off, a camper type enclosure will replace it. At the very least it will be a flat bed that can be camped on.

We have a farm truck. Luckily they don't rust here. I don't take it on trips because 11mpg cost too much to drive.
