Is it OK to fill the tank through the hose or do you have to go right from the valve?

Hose better be rated that high. As long as it is, sure fill it up, you can even use a male to male and go from large to smaller bottle using the hose. Now if filling at a shop ( esp. scuba it seems) they may well for safety reasons ( ??? ) fill ONLY from the valve with hose removed.
