Finally went to 300 yards with my impact

Finally made it out to the range again today and what a day! A little cold in the morning in the low 40s but sunny and very little wind. Zeroed at 50 yards and went straight to the 300 yards range, even had the 300 yard range all to myself for 2 hours. Setup some targets at 300 yards and went to town. Well I mainly shot at the berm to get my POI correct before I shot at the target because it’s a long walk.

Hastily zeroed at 50 yards at 100 yard range then moved everything to 300 yard range, the one on the right was pulled by me.

Very little wind today but getting on paper is still no easy task, happy with some of my groups for first time at 300 yards. this target has 2 groups but forgot exactly which POI in the middle is which group, the POAs we’re middle and lower left red squares.

I think this one has 2 POAs also but most of the shots were from aiming at center red square.

Not great but not bad. My impact was acting up today and my reg gauge showed 0 bars so didn’t bother with tuning and just zeroed and went long. Fortunately the gun shot pretty well all things considered. I think I can get the groups much tighter because the impact at this power level is very hold sensitive, I have to be very consistent or it could be off by a couple of feet. Also recoil management is also starting to make a difference, need a proper bag rider. Went through the last 2 boxes of 29 grain NSA slugs so will be testing 34.9 grain soon once I get her all fixed up and also add the slug power kit.

That's pretty good.

Just the slightest puff of a wind change at 300Y with those 29's will totally destroy a group, that is what I experienced anyway!

I went and looked at the picture of the hits on my 15" steel at 300Y. This was with my Uragan King using 29's. I didn't measure it but it's around 5" of vertical for the top group and once I adjusted POI to center its about 3". But look how wide they are. This was in what seemed like 1-2 mph winds???!!!

Oh and I should mention that I shot my Anschutz 22rf with $7/50 medium match grade ammo at 210Y last week and the vertical was around 9". I was only hitting the chicken silhouette half the time because the ES is so high, like 60 fps. I hit that same chicken most of the time with my Uragan. ES is only 10 fps. Low ES makes a difference at distance especially subsonic. If I were to try to hit this 15" plate at 300Y with this 22rf ammo the vertical would be HUGE!!!

The interesting thing is that both guns shoot about the same at 50Y.

When I get out my $15/50 22rf ammo the ES is around 30 fps so that chicken is much easier to hit plus it shoots better than the Uragan at 50Y.

Though 22rf has the advantage of higher BC so getting wind right isn't so critical.

Happy Thanksgiving BTW.

Thanks @stoti! Happy thanks giving to you and your family!

@steve123: you are right on the money! Yes, it was 1-2 MPH wind when I got the groups. I tried to time it according to the wind indicator but that was only at target. like you said the POI shift 3-4 inch even if there was mere puff of wind or when the wind indicator barely flutters a little. Tried to adjust for the wind a little but without wind indicator along the way it’s pretty hard to predict.

I shot 400 slugs yesterday and as soon as I feel a gust of wind from behind me the POI will go up 1-2 feet! Interestingly the left and right drift is only about 1 Mil while up and down drift can get as high as 2 mils when the wind shift. Next time I will bring my wind meter setup on a stand. I was just plinking mostly and burning through my 29 grain stock. I had a pack of 38 grain and they seemed to be less drift but hoping the 34.9 grain will be the ticket, might go all the way to 38.9 grain if the 34.9 grain can’t get MOA or 3 inch group at 300. Think the 29 grain is only good to about 200 yards.

This 300 yard business is much harder than I thought even with slugs. But that is the fun part right? 😅

edit: just went through the numbers in strelok, 2mph 90 degree wind has drift of 3.14 inch but 2 MPH tail wind has drift of 5.9 inch. Exactly what I saw! Science is awesome! 😀
