Today was the first day above freezing in a long time. I expected some activity. That said, most of the squirrels are now dead.
Penny took off running about 100 yards in front of me and signals she has a squirrel in the tree. So I started running. A good foot of loose snow doesn’t make it very easy.
As I get closer I can see she has two huge fox squirrels treed
. They start trying to come down the tree, So I start yelling to cause commotion. And I get Penny barking. One of them looks around assesses the situation and does a running leap from over 25 feet in the air. I’ve never seen anything like it. I am nicknaming him Reacher NMI. He got away. Penny went after him to no avail. I had to call her back to help me.
These guys are the last of the tribe, true survivors. I’m trying to get a shot at the squirrel and he keeps going around the tree and keeping the tree between him and I. Sometimes Patience is a virtue. So I stand still and wait for Penny to come help. She really doesn’t know how to do it, but she does it by accident. Eventually I get a look at the squirrel. First blood!
