The first theme of today was about 2 to 4 inches of fresh snow we now have close to 7 to 8" at my sister's house, moments of white out and topped with a real feel of about 15 F / -10 C (easy) with 15 to 20 mph winds (easily). Then when there was a break, I took a break for it and went out to my permission to both sight in Glimmer (the name of the Prophet) and try to get some first kills. Sorry the light isn't the best for photos.
(I call my prophet Glimmer is because you see it but not sure what it is, it is a face in the crowd that fades from memory unless you engage with it, then you never forget the figure in the dark.)
My current economical and transportation situation is take it as I can get it, hopefully this changes in the next month. For the next few days, I have my dad's truck, though far ideal conditions to be out shooting a 177 configured gun. Part of me thought of filming this hunt today, but it was too cold and my time was limited plus I need a scope cam still.
Around noon I packed up and headed to @vitals2k to fill up on air and drop off a Christmas gift for all he's done for me, plus all the lovely elk and moose meat he has generously given my family over this past year. Also, if you haven't ever had moose meat you are seriously seriously missing out!
While we filled up the guns and bottles, a weather warning came and it turned into a white out, and I said I am going regardless. However, though the wind stayed the sun came out, thus one less factor to deal with for a successful shot at the dairy. On my way out to the dairy I filled up on coffee at The College Market and needed a new mug because I left my thermo mugs at @vitals2k, he has two of mine now.
Now I might as well mention the set up: Glimmer is barreled with a 177 CZ barrel, regulator pressure at 110 bar, and shooting JSB Hades at 875 FPS or around 18 ft/lbs, scope Vector Optics Veyron 3x12. I borrowed @vitals2k DonnyFL Tanto LDC to try out on Glimmer, I am sold, for the 177 configuration it is a go.
At @vitals2k I reconfigured the picatinny rail so the scope sat back further for better eye relief, so I had to do another sight in, and I found as sheltered place as I could at my permission to do it. For the first mag I had issues with the pellets not seating properly and getting deformed, but doing an extra push to take care of this problem in the second mag. I used my FX Pocket Chrony for some #s and saw FX updated the interface since I used it last week. Also, I need another magazine because I froze my ass off taking my gloves off to reload those small 177 pellets. I sighted in around 22 yards, 20 meters and said good. I do want to stay I need more paper punching time to learn more about the gun, but I had to do what I had to do so I could get out today.
After sighting in, about 55 yards from me were about 10 eurasian collared doves, selected one and pulled the trigger. The wind sent the Hades to the left and I winged the bird, so I had to do a follow up shot. Regardless, I think for the distance and weather conditions for the caliber I think I did pretty well. I need to take some "b-roll" on my shoot, which I will do next time.
After a loop and two misses, I see a pigeon and take aim at about 30 yards, it falls into the paddock, then the farmers cute yellow lab tries to take the prize for its own, no mine get your own.
I see the farmer who his two kids, we speak and I show him Glimmer. We are speaking and I take a shot into the snow, the farmer is about 10 ft / 3 m away. I asked the farmer if he heard the shot he goes no and smiled, no sound is good sound for him. The cows didn't even blink, so I am sold, the Tanto looks good and does the job for the 177 configuration. Tomorrow I speak with Francisco for the 22 barrel kit, but I want some 177 data before switching over to 22.
After speaking to the happy farmer, I saw a sparrow on a roof and popped it, but it was unrecoverable. The farmer said the magpies will have it.
I did try a couple of more shots, but between the cold getting to me, and needing more time with the gun, I called it quits after two hours. I do known this, Glimmer is a keeper for sure. From a 250 bar fill, I went to 150 bar after 60 shots, aka 4 magazines. Plus I will factor in temperature being an issue too, oh and wind. I will try to get out Thursday after work.
