First Successful Squirrel Hunt Of 2024 On Public Lands

I had a great time going out on public lands to go squirrel hunting! This was my 3rd or 4th time going out but my first time being successful this year. The success rate is completely connect to the acorn yield, so what may have been a hot spot a few years ago, can dry up completely the next year or so.

After walking about a mile, I came across some deer scat amongst some acorns, which was a good sign that there was food that squirrels would take a liking to. 20 minutes after my first still, I decided to press forward some 50 yards for another still and I saw some movement. My camo did a great job, as he had not a clue I was there even at 26 yards!

Good for you to stick with it. I generally find trees they are feeding in or under and wait quietly. Most times I don't cover more than 100-200 yards. More still watching than moving.

Always stop next to a tree for a shooting support.

Mast supplies determine next years population (overwinter brood stock). Few trees produce a bumper crop every year. Weather can impact nut (mast) crop.
Good luck.

Thanks a bunch!
I always carry my monopod and a collapsible seat so I can sit and steady my shot.

@N2Shooter Well you certainly look prepared. Which caliber and gun did you use? What's that that you have rigged up to skin it?
The first time I got a squirrel, I had a difficult time skinning it. This device makes it a piece of cake even for city slickers like me! 😃
